Just got it today. I got the LED backlit screen, which looks fantastic until you run it on the battery. At this point it is only about half as bright as when it is plugged in. I adjusted the brightness as far as I could. Dell tried to fix the problem over an internet connection which also failed. Shouldn't this computer be just as bright off of the power supply when it is set at the brightest settings? Anyways, Dell is sending a new computer. I hope there is something wrong with this one and not just the way these computers are! It is unacceptably dim to my eyes.

Adjust the BIOS setting which caps brightness
    Adjust your power management settings

The maximum brightness possible on battery is the limit set in the bios.
Restart your machine, enter the bios and then set the maximum brightness for the battery ( default is 5 or 6 )
Also, in the vista power options check the maximum brightness for the screen when on battery.
I am surprised the dell tech never asked you to check your bios setting

also you may have to do it in Vista via the power management settings

right click empty area on desktop/personalize/screen saver/change power settings/adjust display brightness

I fixed the problem in the BIOS myself, I can't believe that the technician didn't think of this.
    Thanks guys.
Oh, by the way, the brightness setting in BIOS was only set at 3 (of 8). No wonder the screen looked so dark! Now it is just as bright as it is when it is plugged in.

Use Fn+Up and Fn+Down Arrow keys to increase-decrease brightness as desired while running on battery.
