    Hi,

New British poster here, please be gentle ;] !
I'm glad I found some fellow XPS users, maybe you could give me some advice.

I got my new(ish) M1530 yesterday (refurb from Dell Outlet, saved me £200).
Initially I was very pleased, its a lovely machine, but I then found a problem - its the curse of the random shutdown! :(

I first noticed it when running 3dMark this morning to demo the XPS.
It happens fairly consistently after a few minutes; the machine doesnt feel hot.
I phoned Dell support (took 1.5 hours) and they/we found it shuts down in the diagnostics tests too.
    Conclusion: Replace motherboard, engineer booked.

However I have discovered it only happens when its on battery power - everything is fine on AC power.

The question is, should an XPS shut down on battery under load? I'm hoping not. Also, does this sound like a mainboard issue or a battery issue?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer,

    Zebs

When you're mobile, is the battery securely held in the battery bay? Does it shake around even a little?

what are you power settings at? if set on power saver or balanced it can crash if doing games and other programs that require high power. try setting on high preformance and see what happens.

    Thanks for the replies.

The battery is very well seated, no movement whatsoever.
Also, it shuts down even when in the Dell diagnostics, which is outside Windows and any power saver options, so I dont think that'll help.

We'll see what the new motherboard brings and go from there.

    Cheers,

    Zebsy

Dell likes to replace the motherboards...That is what they did for me when my battery wouldnt hold a charge. ;)

Best of luck, and keep us advised on the outcome! :D

    Here's an update.
Its sure to crash 5 seconds after I've typed this but...
... the replacement motherboard has fixed the problem
    (** waits for crash **)

    Cheers,

    Zebs
