ok, well the first and most pressing issue, is what happens when i close the lid on my laptop.... instead of entering the normal standby mode, it goes haywire. basically, when the lid is closed, the laptop now enters some weird shutdown/restart process, where it tells me the computer was previously not shut down correctly. it also causes the temps to skyrocket, fans to stop working, and very slow operation.

this is my 3rd xps m1530. not because i love them so much i bought 3, but rather because the first 2 that came to my house had cosmetic and functional defects. first one had a dented palm rest, and the second had a massive keyboard bulge, along with a very noisy hard drive.

this 3rd one has been gravy so far, but wtf is this lid close issue? anyone have thoughts before i decide whether to call tech support and try to solve this, or just return the thing and ditch the dell train?

It wouldn't hurt to try again, but at this point, I would quit and never come back.

lol, i'm hesitant to call it quits because at its core, it really is a great laptop. performs incredibly, and looks slick as hell.

    overclocked to 600/900, i'm scoring 5500 in 3dmark06.

    this is with:

    2.0ghz core 2
    8600 m gt
    3gb ram

it has played all my games well, the screen looks good, and the system has been stable. i originally purchased it for law school, but its turned out to be a very capable gaming machine.

it just seems that build quality can be iffy, and cosmetic/hardware defects arent uncommon.

okay, after searching around i've discovered something interesting: the laptop will go into sleep mode when i close the lid, only if i switch the wireless switch off. good to know, but still a minor inconvenience....

Here do what's in the pictures i took.

    -Click on the battery meter
    -Click Power Options
-Click change what closing the lid does
-Change "battery" to Hibernate and "plugged" to Do nothing

You dont see it 'under' anyones user name.. you click on the user name and you have a pop up where you have the option to send the PM...

well, the results are supposed to be what you fix here in the settings!!! You should be able to do / accomplish the settings you set here

those settings allow me to close the screen, and open it back up, drama free (on ac power.) however, i do like the idea of the laptop "sleeping" when i close the lid.
