Last night i noticed that the fan was running constantly at medium speed with some bursts of high speed- but not turning off or going lower, So i reboot. BAMM, My Windows Profile is gone- it comes up with the standard win7 background- gadgets gone- and i cant launch any programs - comes back with windows security - Your internet settings do not allow this operation... SO i think Malware... But i dont really go anywhere that could infect me-

I restore from an earlier date- 3 times finnaly it works - i have my background back ( well the one from 3.16 - )

This morning i start up again- fan still always running- background back to standard windows however i can run programs. Now my Antivirus keeps turning off- anonther sign of malware- scanns have come up clean.

Now im leaning to hardware since a simular thing happened when the dell tech replaced my palm rest and screen- that time - after the tech left windows would not load- started windows startup recovery routine- when it finished - Windows can not repair your start up errors- you must reinstall windows...

So should i call dell again - or just put this on the shelf until the new one comes- its been nearly 2 weeks since the replacement was offered- no order number yet- so i have several weeks to wait

    Suggestions?

Hop on chat or call your suppor rep first to see what the status is of your replacement lappy. Maybe you will get lucky and an Order number will already have been created.

You can also advise the time sensitivity you are now experiencing as your lappy is basically failing on you ATM.

And, ask what can be done to further your order along.

See what they say about your status first, then if it doesnt appear you will receive soon...you will prolly need to find a fix.. ;)

    Good luck!

I would contact them about it like Cin' said and ask them whats the status. When I did a dead XPS to Alienware exchange, it took 25 business days for it to be ordered and shipped. It could of been more, but I sent emails to a few people and hopefully my order was handled quicker. I dunno if it was for sure since it still took a long time to get the replacement, but I received it.

On the phone with Dell- they are telling me that what ever dept my request is with takes 7 days--- and they have had it there since the 3/22 so i ask- they cant complete an escalated case in 5 days? ...I told him to call whomever you need to, i not hanging up the phone without an order number. I told him he will have to hang up on me... ( they are not supposed to end calls) SO ill just keep this guy tied up all day until he gets me to someone who can get me an order number....

He may just back to you and say sorry, but we don't have one. On the other, hand you may get lucky. Its a gamble - 50/50 shot.

    Never-the-less, good luck! :)

Well after 2 hours- no order number- did speak to yet another manager who was able to tell me that it is with the dispatcher who would be assigning a system - once assigned on order and order number would be generated- She told me that she would try to contact that person to speed up the request- She said i would her back from her in 24 hours-

I find it funny how when people have SOFTWARE problems they think it's the computer makers fault when it's really the users fault for not properly knowing how to take care of their computer (software wise).

^^ If you read it properly, you would know that a replacement was ordered before all this happened.

Sorry Bro- not a software problem- i have 4 other machines that have worked flawlessly for years- never had a virus or ANY software problems until the 1640 - This started after the last tech visit that prompted the exchange- windows would not load- start up recovery would not fix the issue- i had to reinstall windows- I noticed since then that every 4-5 boots it would load a basic windows profile not mine, i would reboot and it would be fine- also this machine in the past 3 weeks since the mobo replacement the final windows startup where is loads the profile and desktop very slowly. Also software would not cause the fan to Run non stop on Medium and high ( blowing Cold Air) - my e6400 i installed windows 7 back in October- runs fine - no problems

Oh oh..Ok..so 24 hours from now..I hope that you do have at least an Order Number along with some Specs...and even more information. Even, if you wanted you could still call back tomorrow for an update. That's up to you. ;) :)

I would find it hard myself, not to want to call back..I was really antsy during the replacement process of my 1640....!!

ehh? Did you take the time to read his post? Do you know the OP?? [IMG] Don't be so judgmental. We are here to be helpful not the otherwise... :(

You know, you're quick to judge others when they voice their complaints or concerns, but it seems like it's ok when you complain about stuff?

Sound silly, but have you tried running a full scan of the harddrive? Almost seems like there's bad clusters or something. Only time I've ever witnessed behavior like you're describing.

Hard Drive came back ok - i think its the MOBO- im starting the windows reinstall as the fans were always on at 50% and up and the CPU Util is above 50% most of the time- Just now into the expanding files routine and fans are still running very loud, so no change there.... Eliminates software problem

I think so....Hop on the phone, if that is not the replacement you were supposed to be receiving.

That would not make me a happy camper, unless that is the replacment that "worked" for me (as in comprable to my current lappy' & replacement spec wise), and it was discussed.

I don't know that I would be against an alienware exchange personally. Especially considering that's the m17x. I would probably let them send it to me and seriously consider ebaying it and then rebuying a laptop.

But yeah, good luck with that.

yes it is the m17x- howevver until i see the whole order i have no clue if its an order refurb with the c2d or the iC- I think its an i7 and yes i might make a buck or 2. But not my goal in all this- Just want my XPS- ( Xtremely Problematic System) as expected- and No call to me to discuss moving me to another product that i never considered buying in the first place

Call them..if you want the XPS ~ now is the time to let them be aware, so that they can make the changes to your account that need to be made (before your Order Process) continues any further.

Get a Case Number, etc on this...

They are supposed to give you comprable/same/better to what you have. Remind them of that. You can always have your case escalated.

It's not like you are asking for the Ultimate Package, and all extras you can get pump out of Dell... :(

You are asking for the replacement of what you currently have..not a downgrade...!!! ;)

Yes, but no order number, so in the eyes of Dell - nothing has been done as of yet.

True- I just got off the phone again- i think they finally understand... the person i spoke to assured me that she will take ownership and make sure that the changes are made to get the system right...

Finger crossed- that i do not have to wait again-

i guess there are not many Red, 164x, with Blu-ray and 1080p, which are my only real demands.

What confusses me is how Dell can think that changing the product from a XPS to AW would be Ok with the customer- I could see if the XPS was not still being made and AW replaced it- but when someone spends 1K Plus on a product that product was picked for a number of reasons. If i wanted an AW m17x I would have bought one.

Well, I am glad they are taking care of you now, (finally).
Are they going to send you the specs, etc?

No you don't have huge demands ~ these are similar to what you had before? :) We will never know how "in the true mind of Dell, how they operate". They are just a Large Conglomerate, and doing things differently on a daily basis, it seems. In the end, if they come thru for the Customer, that is the good thing, and the right thing to do! : )

They should have replaced your XPS with a XPS first thing, not with the AW...But now they are handling it. Just be sure to stay on top of your order, checking it daily for any changes, etc.

    *Fingers crossed for you also!*

Oh, the Red, is Uber Awesome! That's what I have! ;)

    yes currenty i have
    RED, T9800, 4Gb, 500GB, Blu-ray, 1080p,
the T9800, 500GB, Blu-ray, and 1080p were added after i received, I think that is part of the issue- DELL upgraded my HDD for customer service reasons, Dell added the Blu-ray and T9800 ( that i bought elsewhere ) during a MOBO replacement- and the 1080p was added to replace 900p that i presume was in backorder- I asked for 900p

Dell Just called and told me ( lied to me) that the XPS 164x was no longer shipping and was discontined...

Another manager just call me back - confirmed that Shinivas lied to me- they are still shipping the xps16, Oh did not lie was misinformed - also this same manager noted he returned my call and got my VM- yet there was no message or missed call - my cell is never off. Come on liar...
