Is it possible to get a new slot drive & install it at home on a Studio XPS 1640 which is out of warranty?
    How much would that cost?

You are talking about the slot-load DVD drive, right? A slot-load DVDRW should be less than $30, but it'll be more if you want BD. The cost of labor, of course, if you are doing it yourself, is whatever you value your time at. Dell as a service manual that should guide you through how to take the laptop apart.

Yes, I'm talking about the slot-load DVD drive. Where did you spot one for 30$? Wherever I've checked, I've only seen one for 60$+. I don't want a Blu-Ray Drive. No labor cost as I will be doing it myself. Yeah, I've opened up the laptop before so that shouldn't be a problem.

My concern was because I was trying to sell my laptop & the disc drive isn't working very well. Reads sometimes, doesn't read sometimes. So I was wondering if it would be a better deal for me if I replace it on my own & sell it as fully functioning or sell it a bit cheaper with it at 50% functionality.

Also, know any good places to sell? I will be posting it on NotebookReview Forums. It's up on Craigslist (NYC) (I'm not going to put it up on eBay as there are way too many scam attempts. 5 attempts so far. Nigerians wanting to buy my laptop.)

Yeah, thanks! I just bought the first one.
Yes, it's a regular SATA slot-load drive. Should work fine. It's a part from the same laptop series.
    Now to sell it..
