Hey, just recently discovered this new driver for the 1340 (should work for the 1640 as well) and it brings A LOT of new gestures/features.
I'm not going to list out all of the new features/gestures you can do, but I've taken a screen shot of the configuration window for the touchpad to give you an idea of what it provides.
Also, I know you can enable some of these things with 3rd party apps, but now its integratedso if you're still using the Dell Driver, you're missing out!
You can get the driver here: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/15103-synaptics-driverver-v13-2-6-1/

Apparently it doesn't pick up that I have a touch pad on the 1530. I want the two-finger scrolling option. Is there another software that supports that on the 1530?
-
ya i want it on my 1730 but i dont think i use synaptics drivers.
-
-
Sure the m1730 uses synaptics drivers. dell had them installed wrong when i got it. However the pad is soooo small, not sure you could fit 2 fingers!
Interesting to see what models this does and doesnt work on.. -
Try this one, then you dont have to fiddle with the drivers, if it works, it works, not all touchpads can use it:

I just installed it on my 1640 (Vista x64) and it seems to be working fine. Pinch zoom, rotate, two finger scroll. Very cool. Thanks for posting this!

m1330's touchpad doesn't have multitouch... don't think m1530 has either...
-
well the newest one i downloaded from the site you posted here is only version 6.2 and you have in your attachment 7.2. what gives?
-
I think 6.2 and 7.2 are hardware versions. And unfortunately it does seem like only 1340 and 1640 have multi-touch hardware.
-
yes you are right./

Most use the modded Acer driver:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=218872
and the already mentioned
http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/
Here's a discussion where people report it working on the M1330:

. M1330 have Synaptics or ALPS touchpads.
. M1530 have ALPS only
If you have an ALPS device, you can use the Dell driver for the Studio 1536 notebook. It doesn't offer multitouch, but gestures such as zoom and scrolling using circular motions. -
Working on my M1330 (Synaptics)
-
I can't get the download links to work anymore.
I tired the newest version (v13.2.6.1) and it didn't work for the extra functions on my SXPS 1640. I'm trying to go back to the old version but I deleted it from my HDD and can't get the DL to work again atm. -
i installed 2.6.1 on my sxps16 and for some reason i can get into any of the touchpad settings, the settings pages as shown in the original screenshot that DemonicHawke showed nothing, its just a blank page....weird.
i do have scrolling, i just cant change any settings cause the settings page is blank...ie, the settings page shows up, but no actual content is populated in that window other than the window layout frames.....i'm not sure whats going on there.....
attached is a quick screen showing what i meanAttached Files:

I have Mac OS X on my M1530 and there are drivers written by the community that I have installed that enable 2 finger scrolling on the M1530 under OS X. So I am not sure why this would not be possible on Windows as well, since obviously the hardware can handle with the right software.

ok, i got everything to work after installing v13.2.1.0. This new driver just brought new life into my touchpad!
-
i went back and put the 13.2.1.0 driver on and everything works fine.....awesome. cheers.

A bit more info:
Have an old Thinkpad, version 6.5, and the Google Code project works on it w/ two-finger-scroll. I bought an EliteBook over a Precision for the Synaptics touchpad (v. 7.0) but in no OS does it register two fingers. I'm returning it for that and several other reasons. However, my Acer netbook (v. 7.2) has all of the capabilities mentioned in this thread, but the trackpad is too small to make it usable. Also, the Linux/Ubuntu driver freaks out: two fingers makes it go crazy.
The reason I know this is that you can test whether your trackpad multiple fingers by running "synclient -m" in Linux and looking at the "f" column.
The OS X drivers I think use the "f" column unless it never hits >=2. If it doesn't, I think it uses a combination of "w" which is the total width of the contact points and "z" or z-axis pressure. There's a guide on the Ubuntu website that allows you to use z-axis pressure to emulate 2-finger scroll, but the MacOS driver works much better than that, so I assume it monitors both "z" and "w". A similar driver should be available for all OSes, but is not.
According to Synaptics, all of these features reside in firmware on the trackpad itself. Since all of these trackpads are PS/2 based, I doubt this firmware is loaded at boot out of BIOS, but resides on the Synaptics chip itself. If only we could reflash!
Also, does anyone know about replacing the ALPS trackpad on a Precision M4400 with a multitouch-capable Synaptics trackpad? I think this was possible on older models, but I don't know about this series. -
has somebody tried if it works with SXPS 1640 running Windows 7 ?
-
just make sure to use this version: 13.2.1.0
-
Any consensus on this working with m1330s? Driver works fine with TwoFingerScroll, but I'd like the pinch to zoom functions etc too. I seem to have touchpad v6.3 (hardware) as opposed to v7.2 like in the OP's screenshot so it may just be a hardware difference between the m1330 and the sxps 1340 - thoughts?
-
I haven't tested this driver with all of my machines yet.
However, the "TouchPad 7.0" on my EliteBook 8530w ($1449) only registers one finger under any OS. My Acer netbook ($350) has a "TouchPad 7.2" and can do everything.
I also know that the Synaptics pads on an old Dell C600 and also a ThinkPad T41 can register multiple fingers. Very annoyed that my brand-new laptop, which I made sure had a Synaptics pad, does not support more than one finger. -
I downloaded this driver and did not see a whole lot of improvements? What programs are you guys using to rotate pictures? what other things can you do with it?
-
The newest version doesn't work with Dell 1640/1340. -
Actually, the new version does work (at least on the 1340, though it should also work on the 1640). I've also updated the screen shots with the new version.
-
Does this work on a M1330 with Windows 7 64 bit?
-
I just installed this on my Studio 1555 (Synaptics touchpad). All the gestures work perfectly. DemonicHawk, I can't thank you enough. The Momentum feature (trackball emulation) is the coolest thing ever.
The only thing that seems missing is the ability to emulate a middle click by clicking both the left and right buttons simultaneously. Not a problem, though; I just assign that command to a corner tap zone now! -
-
Works perfectly on my XPS 1640 running Windows 7 64bit. Nice find!
-
I have a studio 1555 with the 7.2 synaptics hardware rev and I installed 13.2.6.1 and all the multitouch features work for me.. 2 finger scroll, 3 finger flick, rotate, 3 finger up to enter slideshow mode, all that stuff. using vista home premium x64 sp2
-
-
Thanks OP! It works great on my Samsung Q320 with Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
-
Just out of interest, would this work on an Inspiron 1520? Im pretty sure the drivers are Synaptics but I don't think the touchpad is multitouch so if someone could shed some light on this for me then that'd be great!
-
And I think this driver should work for all laptops that have the Synaptics touchpad hardware revision 7.2. (At least from what I've seen) -
-
See the screen shot on the first post, it should say under the Devices.
Though this means you need to have a previous Synaptics driver installed to check. -
seems it do not work on hardware 6.5 , i just installed 13.2.1.0 and i can't find any settings for multitouch , its working fine but i can;t find multitouch settings , any one here know what i should try?

Did anyone's else Eject button stop working after these drivers were installed? My Disc eject button stopped working right after I unistalled my old Dell Touchpad drivers... all the other buttons work... the eject button light, lights up and everything, but it doesn't eject the disc...

I installed the latest drivers... everything is working fine... but I must admit... I don't really see the point of all those gestures.
No, wait, I DO see the point, but I still rarely use them. Especially if I have a small optical mouse I carry with my laptop. -
Right....I think the point of these "gestures" is so that you wouldn't have to buy an optical mouse to do easy things easily, like scroll or zoom in/out.
~Ibrahim~ -
no point? you can maybe say that for rotating/zooming/etc gestures (but they are also useful occasionally) but scrolling with multitouch makes things a lot faster, it's one of the best things u can get from a touchpad..
-
Im using Dell's own driver at the moment for my touchpad (So it doesnt directly tell me it's a Synaptic touchpad but a Dell touchpad), however if i look in the device manager I get:
Driver Provider: Synaptics
Driver Version: 10.1.2.0
New Synaptics Driver - Multitouch like Macbooks
