Been stalking the l521x thread for a while but haven't made a post.
Just found this article and thought I would share.
Mystery Dell XPS 14 Laptop Packs High-End Features in Ultrabook Form | PCWorld
Here is a direct link to the Amazon page it was listed on:
http://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-XPS14-9092sLV-14-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0081YPXOA?tag=vglnk-c43-20
I think I'll still be going for the l521x but this laptop seems really good on paper. Hopefully some images leak soon![]()

I've been waiting for this particular model for a few weeks now. I was under the impression it wasn't an Ultrabook and had a proper processor on board - that being the case, I'm in. Otherwise I'm waiting for the Latitude refresh.

Really hope this thing is for real. And 8GB is a possibility. If so, I'm probably sold.
-
Interesting find. The Amazon link has been taken down.
Some points from the PCWorld article regarding the new "XPS 14":
- 0.71 inches thick
- only 3 pounds
- Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5 processor
- backlit keyboard
- Nvidia graphics
- HD+ (1600 by 900 pixels) Gorilla Glass display
- longest battery life rating of an Ultrabook to date: 12 hours
- $1199.99
If this XPS 14 shares the same design elements of the XPS 13, handles fan activities reasonably, supports a responsive touchpad, and allows customer-upgrades of HDD/SSD and RAM, I'm in. -
I hope they get this out the first week in June i need something in my hands before July 1st
-
This sounds like a good computer with the higher resolution for the screen, ivy bridge and only 3 pounds I hope we see something in the next couple of weeks so I can decide between the xps 13 or this one.

AnandTech - ASUS Zenbook Prime (UX21A) Review: The First of the 2nd Gen Ultrabooks -
It's a good machine, but I prefer something with less bezel which dell is doing very well in their new models. ASUS could've put a 13" on their 11" and a 15" on their 13". Also, 8GB would've been nice.
-
ASUS also have atrocious keyboards. Personally, I'd only ever consider buying Dell, Lenovo or HP (business or premium brands - not Inspiron, DV6 trash etc). Maybe Samsung Series 9. Sony are overpriced and nothing special. The rest are all cheap, plasticky, flimsy or a combination of all three.

I needed warranty service on an Asus product once. I might as well have thrown it away (I eventually did). I would have wasted a lot less of my time. I would never buy another Asus anything. IMO, the warranty might as well be written on toilet paper. I've owned a number of Dells and warranty service has been fine.
Although I like the Asus UX31 design, it's a no go for me. -
Personally I would take an IPS display over a TN panel any day, regardless of bezel size.
Maybe you should have actually read the review I posted where they talked about how good the keyboard is and this machine is made of metal!
-
The S9 is impressive, though not cheap (and may not have SSD or RAM upgrades on the 13"). Sony didn't put much effort into their ivy bridge line, I think they've really fallen behind and will probably still want top dollar for the Z. Not an OSX fan personally, but the mac refresh could bring some solid performers. The toshiba might be a stop gap solution for me if no one else comes through on RAM, not a durable unit though. Also there's the NEC LaVie which is going for the lightweight crown. I guess that about covers it, not as many options yet as intel claimed (70 or something). But hopefully Dell delivers on the 14, they may just win me back.
-
hmm, looks nice.
Any news on release date? -
XPS 14?
1st week in June.

Perfect. I was thinking about Samsung series 7 17". Now will wait for Dell's. Hopefully everything will be out till 15th of June.
-
You may want to consider the new XPS 15 then, should have some very impressive specs if you can live with the smaller screen. The Sony S 15" may be a worthy mention in that weight class too. Both will have quad cores available. And perhaps also the HP envy, depending on what you're looking for. Shame I upgraded my tower last year, but my next desktop will be a 15" laptop with a dock. Right now I need something light.

Dell is always my first love for laptops. & yeah, I have a eye on L521x too. I will compare all XPS & will pickup some suitable for me.
Samsung is working great for me too, my LED TV, LED monitors, SSD & some home appliance are made by Samsung & never faced any issues.
I had Sony last year, but I will not consider them because they are overpriced without any specialty. -
When the hell did DELL make this machine.
One machine gets discounted from the Alienware series and a new one uprises from the XPS series.. funny story eh.. coincidence? I don't think so. DELL is playing tricks on us
btw, great find! +rep
-
+1 asus gives customer most hassle warranty on the earth
-
You would think that less than 2 weeks away from the next ivy bridge release and other manufacturers showing off there latest and greatest you can get the first week of June dell would spill the beans on this thing
-
We should know all about this by Computex.
-
I think Intel has a lot to do with this, they haven't even officially announced the ulv cpus yet. Though, ASUS didn't seem to have a problem letting the cat out of the bag. We should be seeing a lot of new systems in the next 2-3 weeks.
-
Does it seem likely that the new XPS14 will support a standard-size SSD (as opposed to only having room for an mSATA like a lot of ultrabooks)?
-
For all its worth, the PCWorld article has this paragraph:
So, a standard-size SSD would be quite possible. -
Okay, well that's one thing that would be a plus for me at least. I have an SSD (Intel 520 120GB) that I bought for an X220, which I ended up returning due to disappointing QC (among other things). I can't return the SSD at this point, so I'm looking for a laptop that'll take it.
I guess on the negative side, I've tried typing on the current XPS line and I find the keyboard to be rather poor. The key spacing is very large, and I find very awkward, while the tactile feedback is relatively low. I don't quite understand why they went with such a layout. Do others find it works fine after extended use? -
As a long-time TP user, I find the XPS 15 (backlit) keyboard quite pleasant to use. I have gone through many typing sessions, creating long documents.
-
Okay! Good to know. Maybe I'll try it again, then.
I guess the other thing I wonder about is noise and vibration. The XPS 14z and 15zs I've tried typing on all had noticeable vibration in the palmrest, but I don't know if that's from the cooling fan or from the hard drive. Not sure about what overall noise level is like, though. -
Can't say about XPS 14z and 15z, but on the XPS 15 (mine, at least), the vibration/noise was due to the Seagate HDD. It was located under the palmrest, on the left side of the trackpad. I purchased a Crucial SSD and put it there while moving the Seagate to an optical-bay caddy: now the vibration/noise was on the right side! Eventually, I replaced the Seagate by a bigger Samsung and, poof, no vibration, no noise.
On the other hand, the fan noise, while relatively soft, can be better handled by a different heat-management design. -
Okay, that's good to know. My M1330 did the same thing, I think with a Seagate as well. How does the fan noise compare to a Thinkpad (or anything else, really?)
It sounds like this new XPS may be for me
-
On my T510 (dual-core first-gen i7) and T520 (quad-code second-gen i7), the fan almost never comes on.
The W520 is a completely different story.
BTW, the FHD screens on the T/W510/520 are the same as the FHD screen on the current XPS 15 L502X, the former matte vs. the latter glossy. I suspect Dell will procure a different screen for the 2012 refresh of XPS 15, which may not be as awesome as the current one. -
I see...
Well, I'm mainly looking at the 14 since I am concerned about weight/size as portability is pretty high on my list of priorities. Hopefully its screen will be decent. I do hope that those who are waiting for the 15 end up with a good screen, though. -
Make it happen DELL.
-
If the weight is similar to the xps 13 I will most likely go for the xps 14 as the screen will be better and it has the ivy cpu, good battery life so hopefully we will see what happens tomorrow.
-
^^^ Thanks for the link. I do like what I've seen so far, both technical spec and industrial design.

xps 14 Here we go
-
That's the inspiron not the xps.
-
Actually from 0:42 to 0:46 is the actual XPS 14. Dell Bill in the L521x thread slyly confirmed it. This is why the video has since been edited on the website.
-
Whoops, sorry. Guess I turned it off too fast. Dell (and Bill) are really playing games with this thing. I better not be disappointed.
-
I heard the new xps14 ivy is around the middle of the month.
Does someone has some more details about the exact date of release ?
I have the feeling they might update the XPS13 with ivy at the same time.... -
Bill isn't playing games. If your boss told you that if you revealed information you'd be in trouble, would you go and tell everyone on a forum you don't know?
-
I don't think that has much to do with it. It's more of a marketing strategy Dell has with teasers for the product: having an "accidental" listing posted on amazon, a followup pc world article, a cnet video with a nip-slip. I'm sure Bill is fully aware of what hints to give and when. So it is a game and actually it's a very good strategy to create buzz around the product.
-
Its a terrible strategy. It causes me to lose interest in the product and move onto another option. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on that front. If this is intentional, everyone who thought of this strategy should be fired. -
Well, the alternatives are:
Tell everyone exactly what you will release months before and allow your competition to come up with something similar.
Keep it under wraps, release it when it's available and risk losing customers who already bought something. This is especially relevant with all the ivy bridge laptops coming out right now.
I doubt the number of customers they would lose because of aggravation is anywhere near the number under either alternative scenario. It's clear Dell wants to time this release for the back-to-school season, when they can sell the most. It may also be related to the availability of IVB chips, Dell needs a huge inventory. I agree, it's tough waiting though.
