Hello everyone!
I was wondering if anyone has experience with connecting XPS 9550 to a Wireless Display?
For this purpose I am using Microsoft Wireless HDMI adapter, and with my old XPS 12 Duo it works perfectly.
Unfortunately, with my new 4k XPS, it is possible to connect, but then image lags terribly, shutters, hangs and usually disconnects within 10-20s... Since this feature is very important to me, this is the only reason why I am still keeping my old XPS laptop. I have similar experience with Google Chromecats and its beta feature of casting whole screen...
I think that the problem is that the new XPS 15 does not support Intel WIDI, since for some reason Dell decided to put Broadcom, instead Intel wireless adapter and consequently not support this technology...
The bottom line, do you know if it is possible to properly use XPS 9550 and any Wireless Miracast Display?

Miracast and WiDi overlap, and the MS Wireless Display supports both. I can confirm it works fine with the 9350 & Broadcom card, can't say for the 9550 though.
Did you install the Wireless Display Adapter app from the Store and use it to update the firmware?Last edited: Feb 20, 2016 -
My suggestion is to lower the resolution to 1280x800. This should resolve the log lag problem. 4K video requires a lot of bandwidth to transmit in real time.

Thanks for the replays!
Its good to hear that it works fine with 9350 and Broadcom card... So it might be that the problem is specific to my computer only and not a general 9550 issue... But also not so comforting for me at the moment
Yes, I updated the firmware, no difference.
MS Wireless adapter supports only 1080p resolution (plus my TV is also 1080), so this is the resolution that I connect to it... I even tried to lower my computers resolution to 1080p (although I use second screen only in this case so it should not make any difference) and it was the same... -
There's actually a new model on the way next month, more compact and apparently with better response/less latency:

Preorders open in US & Canada only for now, though. -
I am using 5Ghz. The thing is, with my old XPS 12 Duo everything works perfectly, although in this case the connection is achieved over the WiDI (since XPS 12 Duo does support WiDI). That is why I suspect that the problem is that this new XPS 15 does not support WiDi, and I find this disturbing, since WiDI is a sort of Intel's guaranty that everything will work perfectly.
Based on the drivers on Dell's support page, it seams that there are also versions of new XPS 15 with Intel wireless, and there is also WiDI application for it... I am sure that Dell saved $0.5 on each XPS with Broadcom adapter, leaving us without WiDI support... -
The only other thing I can suggest is to reset the adapter by holding down the little button on the side and see if that improves anything. -
Yes, that is true, normally I would not care at all if it is WiDI compliant or not if it was working properly... Now this Broadcom adapter makes me upset. I also had another problem with it, i was unable to connect Bluetooth mouse to the computer until I disabled Bluetooth compatibility mode from wireless adapter's settings in device manager. I saw this is a common problem with 9550 but 90% of users would not be able to solve it and would end up with their top of the line $2500 computer that cannot connect to a Bluetooth mouse... all because of this Broadcom wireless...
In this wireless display problem, I am not even sure that the problem is with wireless card, it might be something else as well... -
Under the generic driver list for 9550 (for some reason it doesn't show up under my Service Tag) under "Modem/Communications" there's a "Intel Wireless Display Connection Manager Application" with latest version being 6.0.52.0. Not sure if related to your issue, but if so have you checked that you have the latest version?
Under "Fixes & Enhancements" for 6.0.52.0:
Enhancements:
- Better peformance on Wireless display connection -

I regularly connect mine to my Sony TV (1080p) to watch my shows, no stuttering or lag...
panserg likes this. -
Do you have Broadcom or Intel wireless adapter?
-
I just hit 'connect' in the Action Centre and everything connected w/ no issues, didn't download anything extra. -
At first, I could not connect at all (wirelessly) to my Sony 4K TV, but I changed the TV options to force a particular channel, then it would connect. It works great, except for the 1 second lag, and occasional annoying static noise. It actually is OK for web browsing and displaying photos or whatever, but the lag is bad for anything too serious. Cutting down the resolution sounds like a good idea, if the lag is too annoying; I haven't tried that yet. The only thing that bothers me about it is the static; I think I installed the updated sound driver, but maybe there's more I need to install... I don't think I have done the latest BIOS.

Hi,
Has anyone clicked on the wireless icon on tray and find this: "Windows could not automatically detect this network's settings." I have wife and everything but am just wondering what this is or if it affects internet performance?
