I was having problems with the trackpad not behaving correctly - it would lock, stick and sometimes it would think I had more fingers on the trackpad than I did. I decided to phone Dell and get the touchpad replaced as I had tried different driver versions. They came the next day and replaced it and it works perfectly now! So I would suggest just phoning and getting a replacement touchpad. :]

I actually had a 14x which they replaced with a refurb 15z. the mouse on that machine was buggy as hellll, they even replaced it once.
After having more problems with it they exchanged it for a new 15z (what I'm using now. It works infinitely better. -

How I can get back pre-install software which come with laptop, I just formatted my system.
-
Go to Dell's Support Webpage. Click the link "My Account" in the top right portion of the page, and sign into your Dell account. Locate "My Software" section on the left side of the page, and select "Download Factory Installed Software (My Dell Downloads)"
Accept the Terms and Conditions of the "My Dell Downloads" webpage, and select "Register System," located at the bottom of the page. Allow a few minutes for Dell to scan your laptop to determine the software that was preinstalled on your system. Then select software you need from the list. -

looks like I found a acceptable workaround to the lost focus issue.. the culprit was 'Ambient Light Sensor Control' -- Just disabled it!
Only drawback is that now the keyboard won't light up automatically when the bright light goes away ... which I can live it instead of the tremendously irritatingly losing focus in middle of activity. -
Does any one notice after battery recharged to 100%, just plug out the charger or cord from your laptop then it will show 100% remaining but after few seconds later it will shows 88% and just few second later 87%. Why not it showing battery 100% battery, when is battery fully recharged ?

When we expecting cypress trackpad stable version.

I continue to have this problem - and am online with Dell, who denies that this has ever been reported
-
I just noticed that Dell site shows a Blu-ray Disc BD-Combo for Dell XPS 15z
Spoke to them and their response is just unbelievable
"you can buy a bluray player and install it yourself" ..
"we sell external blu ray, but I cannot guarantee it will fit for your xps 15z"
Has anyone got one? Is it available to buy elsewhere? -
-
Well, this is very interesting. I have had 6 remote sessions with Dell on this. In the first 4 they did essentially the same thing (deleted/reinstalled Cypress drivers). In the last 2, they also deleted some registry entries. None of these worked. Yesterday they replaced the trackpad, which also failed.
So as a last resort, I tried Rktek's suggestion to turn off the ambient light sensor. While I can't be sure (since this seems to recur unpredictably), I haven't had any issues since making this change. Dell-Bill_B, you may want to pass this hint along to support.

Is the XPS 14z just not as popular as the 15z? I can't seem to find a dedicated owners lounge/gathering. Any help?

Just picked up a 15z off the Outlet over the weekend and took advantage of the $100 off coupon... $850 before tax on the following:
Core i7 2640M 2.8GHz
8GB RAM
750GB 7200RPM Hard-Disk
1920x1080 LCD
Intel WiFi 6230
Nvidia GT 525M 2GB
Was really wanting a machine with the 2640M and the SSD, but no dice. Ahh well, I can install one later. Hopefully without destroying the lappy in the process. -
Free next-day shipping too. 0.0

Anyone having jumpy cursor issues or primary Window "losing focus" please try disabling the ambient light sensor to see what happens. -
When mine is removed, it goes back to 80%
Are there any other solutions beside recalibrating the battery? It gets annoying when you have to recalibrate it after about 5 full charge -- which is when this issue starts to appear again. -
-
Recalibrating the battery:
- Fully charge your battery
- Let the battery die, until you can't turn on your laptop
- Charge it fully again. -
-
Does anyone have an issue when switching from the touchpad to mouse?
Sometimes when I plug in my mouse, the wheel settings can only be set to 1. Even though you put it to 5 and press apply-ok, it'll automatically return to 1.
I have the latest Cypress driver, and when I use this mouse on another laptop, I don't have this issue. -
Bro, I uninstall the cypress driver using window default one.
-
Soooo.... I got a 240GB ssd for Hanukkah (vertex 3
).
this obviously prompted me to do a clean install. I used my windows 7 retail disk (didn't know upgrade disks could do a clean install lol).
used the code on the bottom of the machine.
Holly crap. Cypress driver works a billion times better, two finger scrolling like a champ. sooooo smooth.
oh and guess what? the fan actually turns off now. completely silent. unbelievable.

@machiz, were you able to install Dell System software?
I couldn't seem to get this installed after a clean install from the recovery media / after the drivers were installed. -

Not webcam central.dell has a separate application called dss or notebook system software that keeps track of device tag info, driver updates etc.

My apologies beforehand if this has been covered elsewhere. I didn't have the time to read through the whole thread, nor did search yield the answer I was looking for.
I've been toying around with Windows Registry to see if I can fix the overly sensitive vertical scroll acceleration rate with our Cypress trackpad.
When reading articles or forum posts (like this one), I only want to scroll down few sentences at a time. For me, the default rate was way too much as it usually scrolls almost a full page with single vertical swipe, causing it to scroll well past the sentence or paragraph I was just reading.
Well, I found a registry parameter that controls the acceleration/scroll rate for the 2-finger vertical swipe, and have settled on a sweet spot that is now perfect for me. This is for Windows 7 64-bit edition and I use the default Internet Explorer 9 browser.
- From the Windows start menu, type regedit and hit enter to open Windows Registry Editor.
- Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Cypress TrackPad Driver -> AppCommands -> iexplore -> Gestures -> Scroll -> Acceleration -> Curve
- Click the Curve folder and note a dozen or so VScrollAccelTable_xx entries on the right window pane.
- Lower the data value for each VScrollAccellTable_xx. Double-click each entry and type a smaller value. Make sure to enter in hexadecimal format (that should be the default radio button). I more or less halved the amount across the board. See attached screenshots of the default settings vs. my tweak.
The rate change will take effect immediately when you enter the value and click 'OK' to close the entry, so you can fine tune the acceleration/scroll rate by going back and forth between the application (in my case IE9) and the registry editor.
I've only experimented with Internet Explorer so far, but it appears you can do the same for other applications such as Firefox and Chrome. You'll see other applications listed under AppCommands within the same registry tree under Cypress TrackPad Driver. Proceed with caution when playing around with registry though, and make sure you back up the registry file so you can roll back if something goes awry. I take no responsibility if anything breaks, and you've been warned!
Now, I just wish Cypress fixes the other problem I have where the trackpad frequently registers my two-finger vertical swipe as Zoom instead of Vertical Scroll. Very annoying.Attached Files:

Did anyone else notice the long standing thread in the dell forums on the xps 15z's wireless card issues has disappeared from their site?

I'm considering a 15z (i7)
I actually had a l502x xps 15 about 6 months ago and had to send it back due to the constant on/off cycling of the fan. I wanted it for work, and there was just no way I could have used it in the office with the amount on noise it made.
Can anyone confirm what the fans are like on the 15z? I've heard it is near silent, but could do with confirmation.
Are there any other issues to be aware of? I also heard complaints about trackpads not being great? What is battery life like?
Thanks -
its significantly quieter than my l401x (xps 14) was.
It gets even quieter if you do a clean install of windows. the fan actually shuts off entirely. very sexy. -

Is the battery replaceable after removing the bottom of the laptop
-

-
After I upgraded to the latest BIOS, this issue hasn't come up, though. -
Still I have this battery issue. Guys I'm going to start a 15z issue thread soon please mention all your issue over there, Is that right idea to creating another for issues ?

It is a Li-Pol battery with a small wire connector . The battery can be replaced ... But the spares will only be available with Dell . (right?)

Howdy,
I should be hopefully receiving my new XPS 15z within the next week and i had a question or two. Hopefully someone can reply.
Im buying it through the Outlet and i wont be getting any Disk with it to reformat or anything so my query is if i want to do a fresh install and remove all the Dell bloatware etc what is the best way? Just do a complete reformat and download any drivers i need etc from the Dell website? If i dont have the windows CD can i just download one and use my serial from the sticker
Having read through a few pages of this thread seems some people were having trouble with drivers after a reformat. Basically just looking for the best way to get it running well out of the box.
And considering the overall spec of these machines is rather high how have people found it for gaming? I know the nVidea card is not the best but is it running BF3 etc ok?
My spec is:
i7-2640M
8GB 1333MHz RAM
2GB nVidia GT 525M
256GB SSD HD
1920x1080 Full HD Display -
Also, there really isn't much bloatware. There is a trial Anti-virus that you can uninstall, and a Roxio DVD burning suite, which I typically uninstall.
There is PowerDVD 9.5, which I would think you'd want if you want to watch DVD movies, and the normal Windows Essentials, which you can uninstall.
That's it. Really. The list of installed programs is very short. I don't think the time required to reload and track down all the drivers is worth it considering you just need to uninstall a few programs.
If I may gloat a bit here, I just received the deal of the century on a 15z (I already had an i5 one but couldn't pass this up):
Core i7-2640M
8GB DDR3 RAM
256GB Samsung 830 SSD (YES! Newest 830 SATA III model!)
2GB nVidia Graphics
1080p FHD LED backlit LCD
Basically, every bell and whistle, a copy of their $1699 top of the line model, for only $789. Obviously a pricing mistake on the Dell site. The listing was missing any sign of a CPU, but when I put it in my cart and looked at the details, it was the i7-2640M. The parts list also showed a Samsung 810 256GB SSD, but I got it yesterday, and it's the new, much faster Samsung 830!
It's in perfect condition, too. So, now I have a much nicer 15z.
Good luck on your 15z, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Make sure you go to the Dell drivers site and get the latest trackpad and wifi/BT drivers, though. Not sure if Dell Outlet is shipping the latest/greatest and those are important.
