Does it make any noise if you are just in BIOS? My buzzing sound is really weird. Sounds like a morse code. I tried a registry hack which enables me to disable the cpu idle state mode. It got rid of the buzzing sound. However if I enable the cpu idle state mode, it goes back to the annoying buzzing sound.

So i have ordered mine yesterday 900€....

Processor: Intel Core i7-2640M Processor (2.80 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.50 GHz)
    8 GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 2GB graphics with Optimus
    256 SSD
    15.6 inch FHD (1080P 1920x1080) WLED Display

hope I really think that's a good deal since the same config was price-listed 2000$ last September.
I will use it intensively, hope this one will not break after 3 months like the plastic alienware... ;-)

I haven't tried that yet because I'm not really familiar with doing stuff in BIOS. Your noise sounds very interesting. Have you called Dell support about it?

EDIT: On a side note, I haven't had any wireless issues yet!

How about this. Just do a system test. While your laptop is turned off, press the "FN" function key while pressing the power on button. Don't release the "FN" key til you're in the system diagnostic screen.

And yes, I called dell about it. Actually this 15z is a replacement of my old laptop which is the Dell Studio XPS 1640. I had it replaced because of throttle issues.

Good for you :) Hey, I noticed in your sig that you are running SSD. Does your computer make a whining noise during idle state? I'm 3 feet away from my laptop and I can still hear it!

Mine is running on Crucial M4 SSD and has no issue with noise.
Anybody installed webcam driver yet? If so, where did you get it? I did a clean Win 7 installation and have no way to find webcam driver.
Yes, I went to smartsource.dell.com but it didn't get thru 'checking system...'

Will receive it in 2 weeks... i will tell you.

In idle state, the HD/SSD are still alive waiting for you to wake it up, so maybe it's better to change your config so it goes in hibernation which could save your more energy and money and no noise ;-)

Maybe that's a config issue, you should ask Bill B. from Dell, they are mostly eager to help you on those if it's Dell related.
How is your idle state configured in windows ?
Try to check advanced settings with Samsung software if you can fix this.

I m looking to upgrade with second HDD, does someone done something like that already ?

I've seen many XPS 15z "factory refurbished" on EBay for really good prices.
Everyone selling them claims a 1year Dell factory warranty still applies.
Anyone here have experience with those?

The rep @ Dell told me the new XPS15 IVB model is replacing the previous XPS15 model.

THE XPS15z is STILL being sold along with the XPS15 on their website....

I got a 15z 1080p with a defective display (click for comparison pictures).

Dell dispatched a technician to replace my screen, and after it was replaced, the problem is still there.

Today I'm getting a replacement unit. I want to know if you guys still had the same screen after replacement.

    The $2000 configuration has a 15.6" FHD 1080p Truelife WLED Display (350-nit).

BTW, could you please check your 15z if it shares the symptoms in the pictures of my previous post?

Looking at the specs of all the configurations ($1300-$2000) they all include the 1080p FHD Truelife LCD, not just the $2000 config.

I meant that it's worse than the previous model, L502x, with the 1080p B+RGLED screen. I just ordered one from the outlet: XPS 15 L502x i7 QM 2.0 ghz 1080p B+RGLED GT540 2GB TV Tuner Win7 Pro Blu-ray 8GB RAM for $697.93 after 20% coupon and tax and fees and the Amex $100 off.

Anyone here uses the Cypress Driver from Dell XPS 13 page? If so, when you plug in a mouse, does the trackpad stop working, even though you've unticked the Disable Trackpad when USB mouse is present option?

No, my 15z screen looks awesome. I have seen some with the odd screen effect, but mine does not have that, either.

    Depends on their stocks ...

In France you can order new and old XPS 15 (with or without IVB), and 15z...
Since Europe is in middle of the crisis, i guess we do have more choice along the way.

3 days until i receive mine....
    Have a great one!

I just received my XPS15z today...
So i wanted to thanks Dell for creating such a wonderful computer.
Really this thing is fast, robust and with an amazing perfect 1080p display !
The SSD is really blowing my mind, i could install tons of updates and things in a very short time.
I love the soft chick-let keyboard, it's ok with me, i have absolutely no problem, i was very happy to see the bios with with A10 release, and the system is very stable. We have 80°F here, and the baby keeps its cool, though i push it to 3,2 ghz to see how it will react.
The fans are doing their job well, compare to all the Dell i had the chance to buy so far, i m already crazy about this machine :))).
At a certain time the fans went noisy, but the baby was doing the big windows update, after 10 seconds, everything went silent, reboot, and here you have a fast laptop ready to serve !

10 seconds to start windows....I wouldn't believe it would be so fast with the SSD from the videos i have seen on youtube.
3 seconds to do a windows 7 wake up call....

Design is fabulous, and i can run all the windows software i m working with.

I was very hesitating before ordering the unit, since i knew the XPS14 was coming, but hey, i got a High Definition screen, DVD and SSD for 40% less.

Now, about the weight, it's 1kg lighter than the XPS16, and it has so much more power inside, and thinner. Carrying a 2kg laptop is ok.

The audio is superb, i m sure i will enjoy all the ways....
Of course i have to test the baby further one day with some intense gaming experience, HD movies, and so forth, but value for money is clearly a very good deal, try to get a 2GO nvidia card, that's perfect for enjoying the last games in full details...

Have a great day. Happy computing all !

Forgive me to be raving about the 15z, it deserve it... Bravo DELL !

So far the speed of the Wireless wifi card seems pretty descent.
It's going to the max of its possibilities without any noticeable draw backs.
I was watching some 1080p movies on it from my cable connection, and it seems to have all the bandwidth so no problemo for watching movies.
However this might be another story with games, i have to test it.

At the end i will use external amplified wireless card, so no worry dude. this laptop rulez... ;-)

No matter how long I search web or check emails, my 15z runs just fine. But when I watch movies, after about 5-10 minutes the fan becomes too loud. I can hear it from everywhere in a quiet room. Is that normal? Should I return it to Dell?

    Hey

So far, I have no problem at all.
Received my Dell XPS15z only 4 days after placing my order, got a wonderful i7 computer, a 256 SSD which makes it one of the fastest laptop you find around, for that small amount of budget.

Design and screen are gorgeous, seeing HD movies on this thing is a blast, i use it at work too, and i see people looking at me with envy...

Sorry if people think i m bragging, i m not, i m just enjoying it every time i m using it, just wants to share with you what a wonderful experience it is... it's a pleasure from the very first day when i have opened the nice box i kept until this day....

Launching a Virtual Linux, on this thing ? ... 3 secs. and voilà... got rooted !

Updating windows last Tuesday ? ... less than 30 seconds to do the download + install ....48 MO....
then validating the update and doing the reboot ? 13 seconds.

    What else ?

Honesty the only SERIOUS PROBLEM i have is this one :
I find it so hard now to go back to my desktop seems to be going TOO SLOW compare to my new lap....

Everything is flowing so much on this new laptop, also i get used to the keyboard, all right yes, the 15z might have been a little bit smaller in size, but hey, i got what I WANTED .... FULL HD 1960X1080.... ;-)

And it's quiet enough IMO, ok the CPU might need some refreshment from the fan, but it 's never lasting more than 10 sec...

    Sincerely, my best buy ever...

    That's not all !
Bringing this jewel in a meeting yesterday with top executives from a big company, made the guy taking me more seriously.
All of them had old dark Ibm (don't get me wrong i have nothing against IBM), and my laptop was really like a shinning metallic Porsche standing in front of a bunch of boring black old Ford-T, you should have seen their look on their faces... ;-)

Well if i got the business with them in a near future, the "investment" in this laptop will be already fully beneficial !!!

    Have a great day,
    FC.

How to optimize your SSD (life) and speed of your laptop at the same time :
    =====================================================

    General SSD tips

    Restrict pagefile size

    1. Navigate to My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings -> Advanced tab -> Performance section.
    2. Click the ‘Settings’ button.
    3. Select the ‘Advanced’ tab, and then click the ‘Change…” button.
    4. Unselect ‘Automatically manage pagefile size for all drives’.

    DID THIS AS ADMINISTRATOR?
    1. On the Start menu, click All Programs.
    2. Click Accessories.
    3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator from the
    shortcut menu.
    4. When the User Account Control dialog appears, click Continue.
    5. At the command prompt type the following:
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    6. Press Enter on your keyboard.
    7. A message should appear stating "DllRegisterServer in vbscript.dll
    succeeded."
    8. Click OK

    That didn't work either :/

I've used the hidden Administrator account, obtained through:

    net user administrator /active:yes

and still got the same results.

I guess it's not worth the trouble for a minor update.

    Dude,
This is not normal at all to see Javascript not working.
Check you don't have a virus (just in case) then do a Restoration of the system through windows (it will not harm any files).
Most probably it will be fixed very quickly ;-)

Well today it's 28°C 82°F, and though i m using it since one hour with wifi on and doing a couple of things, the fan was working fast for 3 minutes once... all the rest this baby is quiet and fast.
It s quite big laptop (1920X1080), but was great to use it on the run, in the train...
Now it will be one month with it, and i m working on it all the time, best lap i ever had !

Mine only gets hot under load. When I'm doing simple things like browsing the internet or office work it stays cool.
