    hi all

i got my XPS 17 3D today and all appears to be working fine and im very happy with it.

After using it for a little online, it didnt appear to be working to fast considering i have a 30MB internet. When doing a speed test i get time outs etc yet my ping is 15ms.

my signal strenth is high and speed is 144.0 Mbps

is there any known issues with the intel centrino advanced-n 6230?

also if i open my laptop up to check the connections to the arials will it void my warranty?

is there any known issues i should be checking on my xps to make sure it works ok on mine?

    thanks

There are a few loose areas when talking about the wireless cards used in Dell's laptops. I myself have the Intel WiFi Link 1000, which is an absolutely terrible card. I get constant lag spikes and if I am not right next to the router, terrible speeds.

I found that the solution to these problems was to set the wireless card to only use Wireless-G, which although seeming counter-productive, has solved all of my issues. The speed isn't as fast, but whenever I want to download something I switch back to Wireless-N and move my computer closer to the router. I wasn't aware of the 6230 having any issues like this, I thought it was a good card... But you might want to do a Pingtest aswell as a Speedtest. (Also, how far away from your router are you?)

In answer to your question about opening up your computer, yes, it will void the warranty. I have asked Dell about this in the past.

Hope I was helpful, I personally love my XPS, and hope you have similar thought about it :).

I have had many problems with the 6230 with ethernet connections, and on occasions causes my bt home hub to be very slow at times (which never happened before getting xps 17) but turning the router on and off again always fixes the speed drops.

im in the same room as my router, no more then about 10 - 12 ft from it.

i dont mind setting it to G as a temp measure but i should be able to use it at N as that is what i payed for.

i love my xps its just the wifi that appears to be a problem (apart from the power socket)

i have slowed my router down to 56g speeds and it appears to be working much better now. unfortunatly this doesnt show me if its my router or the wifi card thats the probem as my new laptop is the only N wifi card we have (other then mobiles)

Go to device manager and Disable Bluetooth, when active it splits the streams for the Bluetooth and Wifi, so you will get lesser speeds, stupid I know... crappy card to be honest I don't use Bluetooth so it don't bother me.

You don't need to open the laptop, and Dell wouldn't know you've opened it anyway if you are careful with it.

Once turned off your Wifi will be full speed, and you can carry on using N instead of G.
