Hi
I'm new to the forums so will be very appreciative of any advice received.
- I have previously owned a dell studio 15 (1555). Can my power adapters be used interchangeably? The connections are the same but the input and output ratings are different.
The studio 15 input is rated at 100-240V, 1.5A and the output at 19.5V and 4.62A.
The XPS 17 input is rated at 100-240V, 2.5A and the output at 19.5V and 7.7A and the brick is considerably bigger.
Any ideas?
- Also, the optical drive seems to vibrate very loudly. Granted I have only tried it with one disc (the included OS disc for a clean install). Is this normal?

My XPS-17 is sensitive to the power supply simply not being plugged all the way in to the laptop, it'll display a "can't determine the voltage of the power supply error" at startup (I paraphrase). I think yours will want more amps than are avaiable from the older PS and complain as well.
The optical drive seems to vibrate a when a disk isn't evenly balanced, often from heavy lableling. In researching my home BLu Ray player, I found that Blu Ray disks rotate faster than DVDs, which tends to exacerbate the vibration. Probably best to try with a variety of disks. If you can find one of the generic blanks with no labeling at all, that might be the best test. -
As mpalandr said, you need to deliver the proper voltage and current for the system to operate correctly. Theoretically under low-load usage you could be okay, but laptops these days can detect when an improper adapter is being used and often ignore it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just find it a shame I can't just keep the same supply. I was reading conflicting opinions around the net so I'm still a bit unsure but don't think I'll try just in case.

It can't hurt to try, worst case the system won't be able to charge and run off of it, since the voltages are the same, no harm done.
Newer systems with these high-spec components need a little more juice to run. Hence the different adapter.
