Hi everyone,
I was wondering if other people have experienced unexplainable delays with the production of their XPS systems?
I've ordered a pretty basic XPS 17 notebook beginning November which went into production in the second week. 2 days later, I received a call from Dell saying that my system has failed a quality check and they might have to do some more testing or replace certain parts.
Today, after one week, I have received a call from the same lady, saying that the manufacturing team did not make any progress and that my order is still on hold due to quality issues.
I am extremely frustrated, as I don't understand what the "quality issue" is and why nothing has been done within that week? Certainly, if it's a parts issue you could change the parts or re-built the whole system is everything else fails?
It seems a week has passed and they didn't do anything to progress the order any further. My EDD is the 19th, but I don't think a miracle will happen.
Did anyone else experienced this kind of problem with Dell? I'm from the UK.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Can you post your config, please? Thanks.

i ordered mine on the 31st october, the EDD was Thu 18th, this changed this morning to the 26th. I have rang and waiting for an update to explain the delay and short notice for change of EDD.
In the T&C's if delivery if over 30 days you have the right to cancel the order which i may consider to do. -
This is my spec, unsure how to get in the format everyone else posts????

Dell got their timing just right in the run up to christmas.
A great value laptop without any real flaws. Five or so very positive reviews arranged by Dell to go live just as the XPS ships.
Even, possibly, a brief price error in the uk to generate publicity.
They know how to play the game to perfection and have a winner even in a bad economic climate.
Yep, expect delays -

I am still trying to figure out what is causing the delays - and whether this is specific to UK customers.
@david1274: Not sure whether I would praise them for having a good marketing strategy, but failing with their supply chain execution. However, Dell is not being overly clever, because the majority of firms will ramp up their marketing spend prior to the Christmas period. It's just that most of them understand how to align their back-end operations with their sales forecast. -
-
Same here - this is my first and probably last order from Dell.
I would be interested what your customer service has to say to you. Mine was a lady with a strong Indian accent who informed me that there were "quality issues" with my machine. Funnily enough, I spoken to other customer agents who mentioned that they were waiting for a part... -
Whether their customer service is good or bad is open to debate. What's beyond doubt, however, is their ability to market and sell very effectively. How else would they be second largest manufacturer in the world?
Sorry to hear about your delays though. -
I originally placed my order for a XPS 15 on Nov 1st and my EDD is Nov 26th.
I just called Dell to see if they could give me an update on my order and spoke to a very nice customer service rep. It turns out that the delay is with the keyboards and apparently all the backlit keyboards are on backorder. The next shipment should be here in 8-10 days (knock on wood).
In a nutshell, if you ordered a XPS 15 with an backlit keyboard you probably won't get past the "In Production" stage for another week and a half.
Sucks to be us.
P.S. I live in Canada -
The UK don't get the option of a backlit keyboard, sucks for us more!
-
I'm in AU (dealing wiht Malaysia) and there are def production delays...
Replacement order placed 28/10 with an EDD of 22/11, order reset around 30/10(?) with a new EDD of 29/11, order been in 'Work in progress' ever since...
Called dell to question why they would not allow me to PAY for a TV Tuner card to be put in as an 'Extra' - got told (again) this is not possible as it's a replacement system, asked why and she could not explain (this sales agent had the worst english I've ever experienced, but she was trying).
I then asked how I could get the TV card put in, she said I could contact sales and order the part and put it in myself, I explained how the whole machine needs to be pulled apart to do so but she said they could walk me through it on the phone (yea right, ha ha! I checked the Service manual and I really dont want to pull it apart to that extent myself).
Then asked about the order being so slow, I'm stuck for a long time with a faulty machine etc, her only explanation was 'sometimes there is parts delay this can cause delay'
Ohwell, the wait goes on! Let's hope they get their parts soon, I'm well over my XPS 1645..... -
My order has also been delayed. I am in Australia also. Was ordered on 26th October edd was 19th November and now just been extended to December 6th.

Wish Dell would give us the option of switching to the 6200 card, as I would gladly do so if it meant I got my computer sooner. -
I agree. When I picked the configuration, the 6300 was the only option at the time. I would change or remove it if it meant a quicker delivery.

I ordered a XPS 15 yesterday from Dell Canada, and the 6300 isn't an option regardless of what XPS 15 base system you order. It is listed under their tech specs section of the XPS 15 landing hub page, but not available on any orders, which certainly seems to support the idea that it is what is causing the delay and as such has been removed from new orders at Dell Canada.

I was watching the site trying to decide on a build for a week or so , and noticed that the 6300 dropped off last Thursday or Friday .
I'm in Ontario Canada , whats your EDD sitting at?
Mine is Dec 8 , with an order date of Nov 9 ..
Thanks,
M -
I see you ordered the 6200 as well, yet your EDD is a day behind mine despite ordering it a week earlier. Someone said earlier in the thread that Dell Canada told them backlit keywords are on backorder, which could explain the delay and why our EDDs are so close -- they could be waiting on that shipment.
Of course, my EDD could always get pushed back.
Edit: Other than the RAM, our configs are identical, so the backlit keyboard definitely seems to be the delay for Canada for those who didn't go with the 6300 wifi card. -
My EDD just got pushed from the 19th to the 2nd Dec. I'll email them today to see why they added another 2 weeks.
@Dave: Let me know whether you'll get the same EDD as our configs are nearly identical? -
oh great guys, good to see i am not alone
[no offense!]
mine was 28th of oct, primary edd was 18th of nov and later delayed to 25th of nov. guessing it might delayed again to unknown date[hopefully not!]
i did add 6300, tv tuner in my sys, but no option for backlit keyboard. 3 wks at 'work in progress', however, today morning got the email about manufacturing confirmation which indicates they got all the parts to start manufacturing!!! i will let you updated if it is true... -
guys, just check the status and found
Current Status: Manufacturing build completed
Estimate Delivery Date: 24-Nov-2010
edd changed from 25 to 24... after a long 3 weeks!!! guessing on next monday -
why it was changed with 2 days notice

why i didnt get my update call or email yesterday as promised
if it takes more than 30 days my right to cancel my order with no penalty -
For others posting, please state location (country), so we can get an idea if only certain areas are affected. -

Order Date: 11/12/2010
EDD: 12/08/2010
Website shows In Production
Phone Status states "Your Order is Currently Being Processed"
What should be the next step for the Phone Status. Does being processed mean my order is still in the queue to be built? Thanks. -
My order status online....
Order Date: 11/11/2010
Order Status: In Production
EDD: 12/2/2010
via phone.. "Your Order is Currently Being Processed"
[ fingers crossed ] I hope it ships soon... this D820 is about to die. -
Order Processing includes time to process payment. Approval times vary based on the designated form of payment.
In Production:
Upon approval of payment for your order, the order will be In Production. Production time includes obtaining the parts, assembly or build time, and shipping preparations/transit to the carrier. Shipping preparations will vary based on type of order and size. -

Mine has BOTH the backlit keyboard on the order as well as the Intel 6300 wifi card and its due on Nov 26th. Order was placed Nov 2. I talked to service rep yesterday who told me that there weren't any parts showing on back order but he was going to check. I had suspected it was the keyboard holding it up given that all the ones delivered did not have it and this thread seems to have just confirmed that.
*sigh* ... I hate waiting. -
-
Ontario here too ..
Current status is :
Date of Purchase: 09/11/2010
Estimated Ship Date: 08/12/2010
6300 Wifi was not an option when I went to order (but was when I was making my decision on the final build days before) so mine will have the 6200 in it .. and a back light keyboard.
From reading different threads and sites the 6300 WIFI may be the issue .. but who knows , the CR's probably won't know anything if ya call .. They will see pretty much the same status as you on the site..
I called and got the same status I see online . "In Production" and still on track for the EDD of 08/12/2010 ..
Was not worth the 15 min's I had to wait on the phone.

Ordered October 29, config in my signature below.
Original EDD of November 25 has not changed yet.
Status has shown "In Production" the whole time except for day one.
Canadian order. -
i actually ordered at the very first hr, 1 am! -
-
I placed my order on 11/5 and as we were building it i had the 6300 wifi card and the backlit keyboard. When I got the config emailed to me it had the 6200 card - I called my rep back, and after much research they determined that the 6300 isn't available, its on backorder, and they have no clue when it will come back in. My system shipped on 11/12 and I received it yesterday morning

Just some info for those waiting, who may not check the whirlpool au forums, there have been a few posts of interest (imo) there;
RikACT Writes;
Howdy,
There is an 'Engineering Hold' on the XPS 17 laptops. I was due to get mine on the 24th of November, however Dell arent giving an ETA time on the XPS 17 laptops.
They will advise me of an ETA on Monday/Tuesday next week..
Wish they told me what the issue is.
frogalot Writes;
Response from Dell in regards to the delay in XPS orders.
"Thank you for contacting Dell Customer Care.
The Logistics informed us that there are several parts from system are no longer available due to part shortage.
All Orders for XPS 15 and 17 were affected due to this Engineering hold and the Sales are working to recover all the affected units.
As of now, most of the orders are recovered. I'll continue to monitor the progress of your order and inform you as soon as they complete production." -

Hi Zarr,
Interesting post - I'm having the same issue with my XPS 17 order in the UK. Spoke to the customer service agent today who said that the manufacturing team in China has put my order on "engineering hold". Apparently, some quality service issues.
My EDD of 19thNov has been pushed back to 7th Dec. -
At this point, I think it is looking like the 6300 wifi card is having the most serious delays, and they're low on backlit keyboards, so they're sending laptops out in batches as they receive each shipment of those.
Or so I've gathered from this thread and the other XPS threads. -
Hmm, the UK XPSs don't have the backlit keyboard or 6300 wifi card option though...
