I am about to pull the trigger on a m17 from Alienware, but I can get a faculty discount on the XPS. Will Dell have a XPS 17" with Centrino 2 that can be delivered to Michigan by 10 December?

Actually it´s just plain bad. I hope they make a high quality alienware then since I assume the XPS team will work on the alienware instead. If that is the case then my next one will be an alienware probably :)

the m17 is pretty cheap actually, sub 2000 for a 13000 3dmark06 capable laptop.

i think it makes sense, why in the world would you cannibalize your own market share.

The 20% discount for the current XPS can't touch what is available on the m17. Why do they even offer the old 17" XPS now?
I am just not a fan of the autopsy left-overs they put on the skullcap cover.

Is there any other Dell's that could handle the current games?

I'd still rather get an XPS 1730 than that Alienware trash. Don't trust that at all.

But...NEITHER has LED backlighting, so i won't get either. I'd...well I'd probably cave and get (and then probably regret getting) that Alienware if it offered LED backlighting.

Well I guess I will never own a dellienware. After my experiences with my M15x. I was 100% behind the XPS line have owned 4 of them over the years. And four of them are working still with new owners. (Hand me downs to family members)

Where are you seeing 20% off?

I've heard the m15x has terrible build quality. Certainly looks bad, and it's not much cheaper than the XPS 1730 :-/

My M15x would overheat and downclock on both CPU and GPU. So performance was less then my M1710. Granted AW took my system back twice in 4 months, but then I was without my PC for a month before they SAID they fixed it. Got it home and nothing was fixed. Turned around and sent it back the third time. There it stayed on the mother ship. My first and only experience with AW and they have completely turned me from their products. I had to pay for my own return, Got screwed on the exchange rate, although my system was purchase through their Canadian website.

The whole system felt flimsy and cheap, cheap plastic cheap speakers and wobbly screen that drove me crazy.

If anyone is in the market for a decent 15.4" gaming PC I wouldn't even know who to recommend now. But under no circumstances would I recommend anything AW. Especially if you do any business travel. Their ONSITE warranty isn't in any way shape or form onsite. So if your away from home and something goes wrong your SCREWED.

The 20% discount was a faculty discount. If you're a student or work with a company that buys a lot of Dells, look to see if they has a Dell Premier account. Alienware gives 5% to people with a .edu email. I am trying to see what their military discount is but AW has not answered the 2 emails I sent them. I would rather use a military discount even if it is a little smaller than the .edu, because that is my actual job. AW not answering my emails is making it hard for me to give them my business.

That's EXACTLY like all the other Alienware experiences I've heard, from the junky hardware to the terrible tech support :( Wish Dell wasn't going away :(

From what I've heard, the 1730 wasn't much more, and was more powerful and much better built :-/ Yet there were still people on these forums skipping it for six months while they waited for an Alienware equivalent! (Which turned out to be the same hardware in terms of components.)

I qualify for an Educational discount, though I haven't seen that 20% off on the 1730! Still...I've been passing on that because of the lack of an LED backlight :(

If you price one on your university Premier site (if it has one), the discount is already taken out. I put together a Covet there and noticed the upgrades were cheaper. After a little math I discovered it was a 20% discount. A premier site for one of the organizations I belong to only give discounts of 10%.
Never pay full price for a Dell, there is always a way to get a discount on a Dell.

For whatever reason the Precisions don't show up when I go through my university's site. They've got the Latitudes and I think everything else up there.

Darn...that might push me over the edge for the "grey" version of the m6400

    Thanks though!
