Hi there, got a great deal on an XPS 15 9550 which is replacing my Surface Pro 4.

I was using the SP4 to drive a LG Ultrawide 34UM95 3440x1440 via mini display port to the displayport on the monitor.

This LG also has 2 x thunderbolt ports.

Is there anyone here who uses the TB3/USB-C port to drive a thunderbolt monitor and if so, what adapter did you get? (I tried a friends Apple TB3 to TB2 adapter then a TB2 cable to the monitor but this did not work - its become a known fact that this Adapter will not work with mini displayport but it supposed to work with thunderbolt).

I think I could also go usb-c to the displayport on the LG monitor but again could use some recommendations on adapters that actually work.

Appreciate any advice people can offer - even if it is going with a whole new monitor. I just need something bit and high resolution for work.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I've been using the https://www.startech.com/uk/AV/usb-...-over-usb-c-to-displayport-adapter~CDP2DPMM6B on my 9550 with a BenQ BL3201PT to get 4k @ 60Hz for over six months now. It's not a cheap cable but given the legion of problems with TB3 and the 9550 in particular, I went for what I perceived to be a 'quality' solution and have not been disappointed.

The 9550 is a great system but not without it's quirks and needs a little fettling to get the best out of it. Fortunately there's a wealth of relevant information on this forum (thanks to all the regular contributors) so search, read and ask if you can't find what you want.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

I'll look and see if I can get that adapter here in Japan.

I definitely love the potential of the machine and the ability to upgrade it (already went to 32gb of ram and clean install of windows 10)

I was thinking of changing out the SSD since its a Toshiba but ran CrystalDiskMark and was pleasantly surprised at its speeds.

Yes there's definitely lots of great info here. Its a big help.

The Apple adapter to TB does not work with Windows machines. I use the StarTech USB-C to TB adapter to drive the LG via TB. The second TB port on the monitor allows me to connect another TB to whatever adapter or TB device. Works perfectly.
