    Hey guys,
I own a studio xps 1645 i720qm 4gb ram with ati 1gb 4670 card. My speakers are pissing me off. I can only hear sound through my head phones. my speakers arent working. Worst case i tired diagnostics tools at the bios startup and during the tests i hear the sounds?!?!??! when I log in my speakers just go dead. I checked IDT panel and it shows that my headphones are plugged in when they really arent. I called Dell rep to help the replaced my speakers and after a week im having the same problem again. I kind of doubt my HDMI port cause the last time this happened was right wafter i watched movies in my TV through my laptop. please guys help me out this is pissing me off soo much..im starting to regret getting this machine. IM experiencing constant freeze-ups too. some times when i go from adapter power to batter power (Power saver mode specially) and some times it randomly freezes (CONSTANTLY). Please help me somehow. I tried even a fresh install. This is really really pissing me offfffff

Exchange it. Most likely bad component.

For the speakers... Maybe one of the audio jack holes... where you plugging your headphones is stuck and its telling the system that there is something plugged in. Try jiggling those a little bit.

Maybe during diagnostics the system will ignore are you having headphones pluged in or not.. as it will try to test the speakers directly. Just plugin-out something fast in those holes... it may fix it.

I 2nd that, it happened to me once, I uninstalled the drivers, I let the windows use its own, and later I installed the IDT drivers again and everything is fine since.

Most likely your audio module is defective. I had the same issue and after countless hours with tech support found the following post. I sent it to the support and they agreed to replace the motherboard and audio module.

Studio XPS 1640 Speakers not working... - Laptop Audio Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

Frankly you do not need to replace the motherboard. When the technician came to my house I told him to only swap the audio board (where you plug in your line in) and that did the trick.

    Good luck.
