There are lot of threads of complaints regarding the Dell SXPS 1645/1647 but no threads where owners are happy with their system. So, thought of starting this where those people post and chat who are satisfied with thier netbooks.
I have had no issues with the system that make me regret my purchase. I haven't had issues like throttling or crashes with it and am more than satisfied, though wanted to have ATI 5730 gpu but wasn't available when I got the system, so thats no issue again.
So here we go, please come forward and write who all are satisfied with their system :-

Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
My replacement is perfect ( had a 1640 before ). Everything is great except for some dust under the screen. Couldn't be happier
-
I guess you haven't played demanding gamed yet with full LCD brightness
-
^^^^
I regularly play NFS SHIFT, GRID, DiRT 2, FIFA 10, TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED, BLUR, ASHES 2009, etc. on my lappy in Full Screen brightness and 1920*1080 resolution.
Are these not demanding games ? -
Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
Ultra Settings
Shadows medium
Reflections off
40 - 60 fps ( limited to 30 )
At full brightness Temps never pass 78c for cpu and 79c for gpu. I couldn't be happier. I didn't experience throttling with my 1640 at first either but it started later. This could be the case here but the system is running beautifully. -
I've just ordered a 1647, so hopefully i can post here when it arrives in 10 days
The rep told my that the XPS 16 model is close to EOL(End Of Life), and would be replaced by the Studio line and the Alienware line. Too bad -
I love mine. I've had a lot of laptops over the years, both for work and home, and the XPS 16 has to be my favorite. Great screen, simple design, nice keyboard, really can't complain. Yes, the shiny plastic is a horrible fingerprint magnet, and the exhaust port has a retarded location where it blows hot air all over the screen, but those are my only complaints. I game on mine, and haven't had any throttling issues.

1600x900 on most maps, medium setting
1280x720 when inside armor, medium setting (armor invariably leads to my screen being covered with explosions... that's not good for my frame rate. Otherwise I find that I can maintain 35+ and have a much clearer view with 1600x900)
Full Brightness. I've gamed for three hours at a time so far. With A11, I no longer have to have external cooling to do it (it does get noticeably more uncomfortable though).
My XPS 1645 is working perfectly. I sent my first one in because of throttling and various defects-- loose battery, uneven trim, lid hinges opening up... but the replacement was perfect. Well... there's a slight scratch on the left touchpad button... haha. It allows the backlight to shine through it so it's really noticeable. A bit irritating...
But the laptop is perfect! -
I love my 1645 except for the glossy glass surface.
-
I love my xps 16. It is simply one of the best machines available on market today.
No issues till now. Working simply flawlessly !!! -
Good to see people posting here. This shows that there are satified customers of DELL STUDIO XPS 16
-
No problems here! And if I did get any problems I'm sure NBR will provide an easy solution or Dell support will provide a replacement!
Best laptop ever! -
No problems at all with my SXPS 1640 and now 1645! Dell CS is really nice in my case!

Honestly, I'd put the XPS 16 above most 'business' laptops as well. Sure, some other business laptops may have longer battery life and lighter weight, but they generally come with super crappy integrated graphics.
Also, Dell markets the XPS as both a consumer and a business laptop. XPS even has it's own service department, which provides significantly better service than with their generic (inspiron, studio) lines, which puts them into the 'business' class support as well. -
The little light show it puts on when I press the power button is lovely. It was especially striking when I first saw it in a dark room.
And it never ceases to impress people who've never seen the laptop. It's a really nice touch. Sure, it serves no purpose. But it really gives the laptop character. -
Thats it only a handful of people are satisfied with thier Dell SXPS 16 -
To be fair, people only come on this forum to complain about their problems, so what can you expect?
I'm sure more people are happy than unhappy with the SXPS 16! -
I'm happy with my 1645. It was a replacement for a 1340, which in turn was a replacement for a M1330. My M1330 had multiple GPU failures, after which I demanded to have it replaced with something else. I loved the laptop when it worked. But it was a ticking time-bomb.
The 1340 was great, but I had to have the screen replaced once for dust being blown under the screen by the exhaust fan and a second time for a problem with USB speakers causing the system to freeze occassionally when on Power Saving mode (Dell insisted on replacing the screen in addition to the motherboard). The second time they replaced my 1340's screen, the refurb screen was bulging out in the middle vertically. The tech that installed it called Dell and they offered to replace the unit with the 1645 I now have.
I am happy too with the config I got on my 1645. My original M1330 was decked out with nearly all the max specs. It cost me well over $2K almost 3 years ago. The specs I got on my 1645 are nearly equivallent in value to my original M1330. If I had bought the 1645 new today, I would have paid the extra for blu-ray and I would have probably opted for the 7200rpm 500GB HDD. But I plan to buy and instal a refurb blu-ray slot-load drive for around $75 soon and upgrade to an SSD when the prices come down. I'll plop the 640GB HDD in a Zalman ZM-NC2500 Plus (also on my wish list).
I don't play too demanding games. I have the unit on a Logitech Alto Connect stand currently when on a desk, or a Logitech Lapdesk N700 when on my lap. Combined with the 9-cell battery, heat and airflow are not issues. The device is so powerful, it is replacing my aging desktop as my primary PC. I just got a Samsung XL2370HD LED-backlit HDTV monitor, Logitech G19 Keyboard for Gaming, and Logitech Performance Mouse MX to make it a more permanent desktop-replacement. Combined with my Logitech Z Cinema speakers, I'll have a decent desktop setup. Once I upgrade to blu-ray and SSD, I'll have no need to get a new PC for at least a couple more years. -
This thread only has two stars? lol!
Some people are jealous b/c their GPUs don't peak at 65C when gaming @ 1080p -
Now 4 star rating -
Satisfied is a tricky word. To me, a "satisfied" might be a 2.5 star rating out of 5.
So am I satisfied? Maybe, but I'm not impressed or enthused like I was hoping to be, and the laptop turned out to be worse than I was expecting when I purchased it. -
Who voted No?! Get off this thread!
I'd vote Yes a thousand times if I was allowed!
-
so far 90%.... not bad
I would also like to no who voted no and is here in this thread... -
No prob's w/my 1647....
Any issues, is where my warranty will come into play.

Now 14 satisfied owners against 8 unsatisfied owners...

I love my 1647
-
Considering this is a Studio XPS, not an XPS nor an Alienware, they might have high expectations on gaming performance. -
-
Thats it no more satisfied owners
-
I'm more or less happy with my 1647. Some random freezing in Linux but I can't be bothered to nail it down. It's probably a Linux quirk.
-
voted for Yes. I am aboely loving this one. My friends from all over the campus come to see and use it
-
I voted yes as well. I am new to owned a Dell laptop. MY 1645 is my 1st dell. All my other laptops have been HP and I can not really complain about any of them except for bad batteries and flimsy casings.
So having just had my 1645 for one week I am very impressed. Screen is fantastic and the machine is very responsive. DId some temperature testing and at idle it's between 45 - 50 depending on the room temperature and the hottest I have been able to get it using prime 95 on all 8 cores is 74 Celcius. Bought an NC-2500 and that brought it down to 71.
All and all not a bad unit and if it stays this way I will be a happy Dell customer for a long time to come -
I have a 1647 and I am in love with this machine as well. In university, all my friends have complimented me on this machine, and 2 of them even went out and bought it the same month. I love the design and quality of this laptop, and to me its the best one I have ever had. When I go into a store like Best Buy and sample all their laptops, I know that I have a better quality machine at home than all of those sitting in the store. I am sure there are a lot of satisfied Studio XPS customers, but majority of the ones coming to this board are people with problems.
