Am watching Lisa Glade's review on the new XPS-15:

She says there's no support for driving external 4k displays at 60hz. Watch from 6:50 onward.

What a surprising omission on Dell's part. No Display Port support. And the HDMI is 1.4, giving only 30hz.

I run my XPS-13 connected to a Dell 4k display. Runs great at 60hz, and not so great at 30hz.

Maybe the XPS-15's Thunderbolt port would help, but is there a Thunderbolt to Display Port adaptor?

the USB C port supports display port 1.2

I thought about trying this one https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_to_displayport_cable

    She is wrong.

The Thunderbolt 3 port, which happens to use a USB Type-C connector, is absolutely compatible with DisplayPort. Buy a USB Type-C to DisplayPort adapter. Other laptops that use Thunderbolt 3 on USB Type C (like the MacBook) do this just fine.

Edit: You're misunderstanding her. She's saying that the HDMI 1.4 port doesn't support 4K@60Hz, which is accurate. She's also saying that she hasn't had success using a Thunderbolt-->HDMI adapter running at 4K@60Hz. But I can guarantee you that Thunderbolt-->DisplayPort will work fine.

Good to know. Thanks. And thanks for the link to the cable. Helps to know there is an easy solution.

It's just because there aren't a lot of USB type C cables and adapters out. Just wait a few months. By this time next year, you won't have any problem finding adapters for USB-C

There are plenty of adapters. I ordered a handful back in october dirt cheap from some chinese site.
They took forever, but still got here in november which is more than I can say about dell. I just got the laptop today.
I immediately put it to 2 battery tests so I know what to expect when I go on the road.
