I can only humor at the fact Dell left out the processor in the XPS 17 that I just recently ordered.

I got it in on Thursday (June 2) and after turning it on... got 7 beeps repeatedly, but nothing else. Phone support diagnosed it as a bad motherboard and sent the tech out. He arrived a little while ago to learn there was no processor in the laptop. However, strangely enough, there was an indention in the heatsink glue indicating there was at one time a processor used with that heatsink. There were also several missing screws in the motherboard, of which the tech marked. Must have been a bad day for whoever put this one together... and it proves this computer could not have been tested after assembly.

I opted for a replacement instead of continued repair. Maybe I will be more fortunate with the next one.

You didn't order a refurbished unit, did you?

Are you the "Home Theater Shack" Sonnie?

Damn must of been the guy or gal's last day or something when he built that computer. Hopefully you'll get that all sorted out.

How come you could hear the 7 beeps without a CPU inside ? The CPU is the one who does the checkings and triggers the beeps. You may have other component missing...

I am not sure why, but it was happening. We did not notice anything else missing, but I am getting a replacement unit sent instead of trying to repair that one.

Those were probably the BIOS beeps. You don't need much of anything working for those beeps to tell you what's wrong.

BIOS is just a flash memory chip. You need a CPU to execute the code from it.

    Missing screws, missing CPU ??

Somewhere along the line, someone has taken your laptop apart and stolen your CPU.

What I find most interesting is that the heatsink had been used.....

This kind of stuff is generally part of the Power-on self-test, which is handled by the bios (I believe in the northbridge) rather than the cpu.

Trust me, you need a CPU to POST. The northbridge does not have any processor inside.

I sent a link to this thread to a friend, and he pointed out something that seems quite likely. i.e. the laptop likely left the factory with a CPU, but somewhere between the factory and the OP, somebody took the CPU out.

If I was Dell, I'd start looking for carrier employees who sell CPUs on eBay, not rogue employees at the manufacturing plant.
