I got my xps 1330 yesterday and seeing as how I had horrible stories with my old laptop with over heating, i wanted to know if there should be a concern with my 1330.

I ran a CPU/GPU intensive application (2 isntances to use both cores) for about 35 minutes and after about 25, i noticed when the graphics card went to 104 degrees, it throttled a lower profile and it started to cool down again.

My question is, are these temps normal? What is a normal gpu idle temp? Mine is about 65 degrees. It seems a bit high.

My M1530 GPU idle temps are usually 55-60. I would say your GPU is overheating 104 is ridiculous even after long gaming sessions, most people don't see temps that high.

    104 is what i have for m1330 after 3DMark06

normal GPU idle is around 65 for me in a 27C room

if u dont like it, do the copper mod

( though the M1330 and M1530 look so similar, the actual cooling system is a little different.... the M1530 has springs to push the copper cooling stuff onto the GPU, while the M1330 has a thermal pad connecting the GPU to the copper cooling stuff... thats why the Copper Mod works for the m1330, replacing the thermal pad with a (better) compound[copper]..... and thats why the copper mod is useless on the m1530 becuase its just not useful.... and u'll get m1530 GPU idle temps on the m1330 if u do the copper mod)

Its not that im not satisfied, i couldnt care less if the computer was hot or not, i just dont want to one day find my computer catching on fire lol.

Ill leave it as is for now, i have a warranty so it should be okay.

if those are idle temps.. bad...
    wats the ambient temp?

{hint, if u want lower temps, undervolting the CPU is a good+cheap+noproblems way of doing it)

Those idle temps are bad, but they are normal. Undervolting your CPU makes no difference to GPU idle temps as it's the thermal pad that is causing the issue. 104C is a bit high for peak temps though and undervolting your CPU will help with that, bringing it down to 99/100C and preventing the throttling.

    I had:

    Pre copper mod:
    Idle: 66
    Max: 102

    After copper mod:
    Idle: 49
Max: 75 (63 real use max)

undervolting makes a little difference if u really want to reduce the temp w/o doing the copper mod.... since the CPU and GPU shares the same copper pipe, it makes sense that if the CPU is hotter, less heat will be conducted by the GPU(and vice versa)

I do not want to copper mod it yet, i havent had any problems with it overheating, the laptop is comfortable even when temps are 104.

so i know the cooling is different with the xps m1530, but on the first page, i think my temps are high. would undervolting cool down the GPU?

Undervolting the GPU would probably decrease its temperatures and a slight increase in battery life.

You can't undervolt the GPU like a CPU, they are designed very differently. As stated before, the most effective way to reduce temps is a copper mod.
