Hi Folks,
Wondering what GPU is in use if you have Optimus Technology.... wonder no more.
Optimus test tools finally in users hands - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
Optimus State viewer is a simple utility which instantly shows if your Nvidia dedicated GPU has turned on.
Enjoy.

Thank you, this is very useful
-
Awesome, now if there was only a way to actually manually switch Optimius On and Off.
-
Simple answer is you can't, but you can force any app. to always use the discrete GPU. Just add the exe file name in the Nvidia control panel.

This tool already comes standard with the laptop, and was included in the L501x as well.
Right click Desktop -> Graphics Options -> Tray Icon -> Enable
This will show you if your Optimus GT xxxM is being used or not. -
Have you tried the Optimus State Viewer, to many people it has proved very useful.
Utility does not come as standard.
You should think before you type. tray icon meh. -
I apologize, I didn't mean to show everyone how much more simple it would be to do the same thing as the program you're suggesting, and it only takes 2 seconds to do, because it's already installed on your computer, and has been on every Optimus computer since Optimus came out. But, I'm a nice guy, so you can copy and paste my method into your top post. That way, everyone will save time, and I'll even let you take credit for it. Sorry for the two people who wasted their time (proved very useful).

Apology accepted. At least you admit when you are wrong.
you really should think twice about contradicting people in future. -
People should really stop being sarcastic on the interwebs.

the gpu status monitor keeps saying the nvidia chip is off when i have open applications i manually programmed in the control panel to use the gpu. is this a glitch in the software or can you disable the integrated gpu somehow?
-
He wasn't wrong. The tray icon was the thing I used besides checking if the fan kicked up or just guessing to see if the video card bloody worked. Granted the viewer and the tray icon are two different ways to see if Optimus is working but ultimately they do the same thing =/
And I know that you can't have the option to have the GPU be active with certain programs by choosing them. But, I've ran into a few problems with that playing older games. Also, I prefer just to have my discrete GPU working automatically without configuring everything.
Nvidia Optimus State Viewer.
