In the games option you should be able to change the image size by messing with the res or it will have a screen parameters setup.

I actually remember now sli never worked for me on latest drivers and I had to roll them back. You don't need the sli option in the game. If you have sli on in nvidia it will always use both. If you use msi after burner there is actually an option to show each gpu usage on the LCD game panel.

Your right about the latest newest drivers don't work with sli enable gives the bsod screen, another guy said this and said to use the previous version and its good.

I have sli enabled in the nvidia panel and i installed batman arkham city goty edition i thought within a game video settings is where you turn on sli but I guess not right? If its enabled in the nvidia panel then its running a sli right?

Also i notice batman has option for hardware physx since most of us now don't use the m1730's agea physx dedicated card, are we still running a hardware physx card or no? How does this work? Thanks

Physx is powered by the gpu these days and the cpu if the gpu doesn't support it. Its the way games and nvidia are programmed now. All the agea card used to do was take a small bit of weight off the cpu but now nvidia own physx they just program the gpus Cuda cores to deal with it.

I think all the sli option in game settings is for is incase you don't have sli activated in the nvidia control panel.

I have replaced the system board by new one, and no response, try with other keyboard, and again no response. The "caps lock" light is on blinking and then nothing.I have tried with my old graphic card (broken, but the computer with it starts and no image) and the same again.

Finally today put another cpu and all lights on, (power, battery...) then off and no response.
Reading the service manual I have find one power management board, that is not in the board, if the problem is not here i finally stop searching it.

So I was able to get 334.89 installed and working in SLI on my 1730 with 8700m GTs. Thought that might help some people running into the BSOD on boot with the newer drivers. Gonna keep testing from here.

Hello, I am now the proud owner of my first XPS M1730 that I have recently finished restoring :) anyone got a cheap 9800m GTX SLI? :)

    Specs:
    Core 2 Duo T9500
    4GB ram
    Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT SLI
    Windows 8.1 Pro

So far it's been running ok, the board originally had A10 and the fan profiles were terrible starting the fan at 70°C dropping to 60°C on idle, now with the new A11 bios the fans kick in at 45°C and drop the temp to 40°C on idle and go to high at 50°C and drop to about 48°C on load :)

Atm I need a stable driver that works with SLI, Windows 8.1 auto installed 327.02 and SLI worked but performance wasn't great so I installed 341.81 but SLI doesn't work (freezes on boot, Windows 7 showed BSOD on boot when I tried 341.81) then I tried GeforcerFX's 334.89 suggestion and SLI works with good performance but when testing Crysis (my testing game) I get driver crashes and freezes (I never got crashes with the other drivers) so does anyone have a good driver version that works with 8700M GT SLI and has good stable performance? I have a small internet data limit and can't try them all myself :-(

And lastly, I noticed a sort of light yellow tint and I saw a VBIOS update that suppose to fix a yellow tint but it is a Beta so has anyone tried it, is it stable (being a Beta) and does it fix the yellow tint? Thanks

Thanks, I'm in Australia and that's $274.74 AUD for me, still a little pricey for me but it's the cheapest I've seen so far, thanks :) are they brand new sealed by Dell or second hand?

They say that the card is new and they do look new. The card is sealed in an antistatic bag but the box does not say Dell on it. The seller said that the cards are overstock and that they buy them in bulk packaging.

I tried 334.89 again and it seems to work well on other games with no problem, but Crysis will work for a while before the game locks up.

Has anyone tried the beta VBIOS to fix the yellow tint, or is there another fix for the yellow tint?

Metalman's suggested seller is where I got my 9800m GTX's from and they have been running great since June (granted i didn't get to game a ton this summer). The 9800m GTX's can use the latest drivers without issue.

334.89 also gave me stability issues after awhile, but was a lot better then the 341 series drivers. The default windows installed drivers (327 for you) always worked best for my 8700m GT cards, most of the others I tested and I ran into stability problems either on boot or during games. 334 gave me the best overall performance, but the default windows drivers were still the most stable. The 9800m GTX's are a very nice upgrade, but after spending the last 5 months gaming on this thing, if your interested in the newest titles coming down the pipeline this fall I would just say save your money. We have lost Driver support on all the cards due to there age, and even with a x9000 running at 3.6ghz we are CPU bottlenecking the 9800m GTX in most modern games.

Thanks, I'll just install 327.02 again and hopefully it's more stable, I mostly wanted it for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and older games (possibly Battlefield 3 or 4 if it runs on the 9800 GTX's) I only got this M1730 for $115 AUD and when I sell my other parts, my M1730 repair project will cost me nothing, possibly even profit :) I'll only upgrade to the 9800 GTX SLI if I can find a cheap one here in Australia (as there's no point in sinking money into an almost 9 year old laptop), I decided to get an M1730 because it ticked all the boxes I wanted for a cheap gaming laptop in my budget :)

My screen has a slight/faint yellow tint to it, I don't know if it's the same yellow problem that everyone's got but mine is like a projector when it starts getting a yellow tint.

Never played Black ops 2 on the m1730, but looking at the requirements and my experience with the other cods on my even weaker m1710 says it will prob play fine. Battlefield 4 is a no go on my system in multiplayer, can barely get above 30 FPS for any meaningful amount of time, CPU limited GPUs aren't doing anything. Bf3 can play just fine on my system, which amazes me since there's not a lot of difference in there multiplayer. GTA V is a no go, CPU limited, same for The Crew. It's basically the curse for this laptop, as long as the game is CPU light then the system can utilize the dual GPUs (borderlands eats them up) but a lot of the modern games are expecting 4 cores (or 4 threads at least) and a better overall performance on the CPU than these C2D can push anymore.

With my Core 2 Duo T9500 at 70% to 100% and 8700M GT SLI, Black Ops 2 at 1024x768 all on low settings runs at about 40-60fps so it's rather playable :)

Does anyone know what version of MSI Afterburner still works with the M1730's Logitech LCD? as the newest version (4.1.1) does not detect it. I'd like to be able to display my temps and usage.

I found a way to enter the BIOS "Thermal Control Panel" for those that want to see there real temps:
    http://www.tomsguide.com/faq/id-1865540/change-dell-laptop-fan-speed-updated-info-questions.html

Once you have read it, to exit that mode press: SHIFT + FN + DELETE, and the Scroll Lock LED will stop flashing.

i am on Afterburner 4.0.0 and it works fine still, if i move up then I lose my Logitech display. Whats odd though is that my friends hacked up G15 screen still works with the newest 4.1.1

Thanks, I'll try 4.0.0, I have a G510 keyboard and the latest still works on its LCD :)

Just for fun I had a spare M1730 LCD, I checked the M1730's motherboard schematics and found that the LCD is a module connected to the motherboard via a USB 2.0 line, so I got a USB cord and soldered it to the LCD then connected it to my PC and it works!! it shows XPS, then I installed the Dell LCD driver and it works! :-D There is a picture showing the correct wiring if you want to try it yourself, the unused pad on the right is for Dell diagnostics so it's not needed.

had a spare ssd and decided to install it into the m1730...

my goodness this has now become quite a nice little system , running win7 x64

    specs are
x9000 @ 3.6ghz using 1.35v (edit: had in increase voltage for extra stability under load)
    8gb ddr ram
    9800m gtx (341.95 drivers)
    os hd - toshiba 500gb
    2nd hd - wd 1tb
think i may remove the cd/dvd and put in another hd

when i opening it up for a clean out and change the thermal paste i chucked out the wireless card and the physix card.

seems to be running quite well

(note: bios is set to 3.2ghz to force fans to full and throttlestop fixes the clock/volts)

Hi, I recently picked up a M1730, upon reinstalling Windows 7 Pro 32bit I am unable to enable sli mode under any nvidia drivers (including the Vista drivers provided on the dell website). The laptop is running fine otherwise. Only 1x 8700 GT is listed under graphics adapters under device management. Is there a set order of programs/drivers you need to install to get both GPUs detected under a fresh install of windows?

    Thanks.

Welcome! Have a look in your bios and see if your graphics card says it has 256MB of VRAM or 512MB of VRAM?

Do you have 2 fans on this side like in this pic or only 1 fan?

Hey, thanks in advance for your help. 256mb of VRAM is stated in the bios, and it has two fans on the right side, as pictured. I took it apart today and blew the dust out as well as re pasted it and only 1 gpu is showing up in device manager and gpuz.

Your VRAM should say 512MB as each card is 256MB each, since it's saying 256MB that means your bios is not picking up the second card, in my experience, when my CMOS battery (coin battery) was flat the bios didn't pickup the second card, try installing a new CMOS battery (located under the keyboard) then check your VRAM in bios again :)

Bought a 9800 GTX SLI GPU refurbed off US ebay for around 50 US+shipping. Installed it no worries and the laptop is running fine. Perfect as a second machine to play Diablo 3 on when I want to get out of the office :D

Probably going to sell it on soonish and replace it with something a little more modern, but still a capable laptop in some respects.

Sounds like the mobo is dead. You can still get some replacements on ebay for a decent price (~$70-100), parts-people.com also have some instock still as well.
