I am wondering what extra stuff (hardware, features) people would like ina xps m1530. I would definetly like the choice for a 8700m or higher card choice in the laptop as well as a less noisy slot load drive. that all i can think of atm :)

    Backlit Keyboard.
And one minor anoyance that i wouldnt mind fixed, when an SD card is in it sticks out by about half a cm. While not the most major of defects i find this anoying beacuase i use this for readyboost.
But apart from that its perfect.

I don't think we will see a higher end GPU in these laptops in the current build factor. Hgher end GPU's require better cooling. XPS M1730 will make sense from the gamer's perspective:
    1. Larger screen real estate
    2. Desktop replacement

I will hardly call M1530 a desktop replacement. It has that almost perfect balance between power and portability.

What I really like to see in the future for XPS M1530 - more USB ports, LED display option for all the resolutions currently offered, official Dell 64-bit OS support, and a little more detail to the build quality - I do believe XPS M1530 is a very good built machine, but here and there you find the pieces like plastic silver insert on the right side by the black media keys insert, keyboard buldging. etc.

As far as the slot loading drive - I have no problems with mine - it does make noise when loading and ejecting CD/DVD, but otherwise it is less noisy than the regular slim DVD drive I have in my HP laptop. One more thing about the slot loading drive - I haven't seen a faster ejecting drive in my life before :D no more waiting for the drive to open.

    8700GT card
backlit keys wit a toggle switch
    eSata port

Yeah, but 8700gt's run at their speed cooler, then an upgraded 8600gt would.

Other than a backlit keyboard and 8700, how about a larger touchpad?

Backlit keyboard is one thing I'd love.

I'd like to see a Firewire 800 or esata port. There's no true high-speed data transfer method otherwise.

a larger touchpad would be real nice, this one is so tiny. even the macbook air has one that is about twice the size or more. backlit keyboard would be really cool as well.

8800! Definitely an 8800! GTS or GTX i don't care, even the cheap $1300 gateway's got an 8800gts...dell, what the hell are you thinking...installing a cheap 8600 on a top-of-the-line xps?....

Just can't bare the crappy fps I get for some of the games...everything else is fine, just need a better graphics card~~~~~~~~~~~

Maybe you should get a M1730 or the Alienware M15X... The 8600 is not cheap and it is adequate for gaming.

As for features, better LCDs regardless of the resolution selected so that people don't have to exchange their systems 3-4 times...

You should have went for the M1730 or an Alienware laptop if you wanted your laptop for HEAVY gaming. The m1530 cannot handle the 8800 because of the heat that it produces. When dell made the m1530, they were going for a slim multimedia laptop, not a hardcore gaming laptop. There's a tradeoff between performance and style. Look at most gaming laptops, and you will see that they are all bulky. Look at the macbook air, it's super stylish, but it does not perform anywhere near the XPS...so...

Anyway, new features: LED backlight for all resolutions. Larger touchpad. Backlit keyboard. STOP USING those crappy SAMSUNG panels and stick with the good stuff (e.g. LG!!!).

Are u naive or what?....have u noticed how slim that xps 1530 chasis is?....8600GT is the best you can get out of most 15.4" laptops , unless you go for the alienware 15x which has a chasis near double the height of the xps 1530, then yeah it could fit geforce 8800gtx or w/e, and as mentioned above, 8800 or 8700 will produce more heat than the 8600GT

    Wouldn't help anyway.

If you want more data, check out the 512mb vs 256 mb DDR2 8600M GT threads. It'll give you an idea.

I think the 8600M GT is a fine graphics card and it's just right for the 15.4-inch screen of the M1530. I don't play many games on my M1530. I think an 8800 would eat too much power.

Backlit keyboard... That would be nice, but I consider this a nice extra rather than something essential that I'd feel is missing.

The 1680 x 1050 CCFL screen that I have now (it's an LG) is very good, but if there would have been a LED backlight version I would have chosen it.

A bigger touchpad would be a really good idea.

Better speakers would be good, the speakers in the M1530 aren't great.

Not going to happen... What you need is a M1730 or M15X. You can post as many times as you want asking for this it's not going to happen on the M1530.

probably not, 9 series isn't any better then 8 series.

for instance 9800GTX is either same speed, or in some places slower then 8800GTX

A better graphics card is definitely needed. Dell should integrate a type 4 or 3 mxm slot in the xps 1530, and allow for more expandability. I'm really hoping they offer an nvidia quadro FX 3600M as an option in the near future. Talk about antilacing and antistrophing capabilities. Crysis would play significantly better. An esata port wouldn't hurt. Display port would be nice, would allow for serious external displays. :p

I have to totally agree about the speakers. The M1530 is supposed to be a MULTIMEDIA laptop, as Dell advertises, and the speakers are absolutely horrendous. And thats using the upgraded Audigy HD software. The speakers are far worse than the ones on my Latitude D600.

Just go to any store like Best Buy and compare the latop sounds - the new Toshiba A305 laptops use Harmon Kardon speakers and they sound great! HP and Compaq use the Altec Lansing sound bar and sounds a whole lot better than the M1530. Dell uses the cheapest speakers they could possibly find. All this in a laptop that they sell for a list price of $2500 or more (excluding all the discounts and coupons)? I will not be buying another Dell until they improve on their components.

The 9600gt is supposted to be around 2x as fast as the 8600 but should still fit in our 1530's with its 65nm dieshrink~ Ill take one of those with my LED screen please.

that is based on the 8800m gtx series, it would melt inside the 15 inch frame of the m1530.
