I wanted to know if Dell would supply MS Office restore disks for XPS laptops, what with W7 coming up. Took a look on these forums - and initial signs looked good, with people saying that you can just order these from dell.
I thought I'd check with Dell though and phoned. Finally got through to someone on my third attempt, who immediately launched into the hard sell. I said I wasn't interested, just wanted to know: do XPS laptops come with recovery disks for Office, if not could I order them later?
Her response - I would get the disks ONLY if I placed my order through her, it was not possible to get them later. I thanked her and ended the call. 2 secs later my phone rings, and it's the woman from Dell giving me the hard sell again. I say "look, I ended this call" to which she says "In that case I recommend you do not call Dell again"(the cheek!)
Anyway, I wondered if anyone knows for sure - will Dell supply disks for Office at purchase or afterwards? Thank you in advance, wise ones!

Any ideas? Is it worthwhile to get OEM office so close to windows 7, or should I buy retail?

Weird. When you order the laptop it comes with MS Works by default, and you can select verious versions of Office as better options (as you probably know). I just use OpenOffice so I've only ever got the Works option, but the laptop has always come with the install disc. So I'd assume Office would come with the discs as well, but I don't know for sure.

Nition nailed my thoughts, as well. You can always call Dell.
Edit: Tried to ask on chat, but it won't connect.Sry... -
thanks guys. well yeah I did try calling dell - each time it seems to take two or three attempts before I'm connected to someone who would deign to talk to me! I know dell used to have the policy of sending out replacement disks, but not sure if they still do!
-
Yes, they will send you replacement discs if you request them to. If you didn't order office with your system though, they aren't going to send you it...
Just get on Dell chat and request it. I don't know what you mean by Dell was giving you the hard sell. They will send you any discs for software that was ordered with the system. Can you not find your original box and discs because you should have them from when the system was ordered as Dell sends recovery/reinstall discs with every computer. -
I bought an M1530 with Office 2007 Basic (Word/Outlook/Excel) and it did come with full install CD at purchase
Have no clue about after - especially as the install requires a CD key which is on the CD case -
The reason for the question was I was considering an ebay purchase, and not having bought a Dell with Office preinstalled, did not know what to expect in the box. As it turns out, all disks are present and correct, and the machine is awesome! I picked it up today and the seller was just lovely. -
I got Office 2007 Home Premium (Wordd, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote) at Costco for $74 when it was on sale for last month.

Does dell offer big discounts when you order from them? If not just buy it from a retail store.

You can also get good deals on these at places such as buy.com, amazon.com, etc. Sometimes yes..they are discounted.
