After one of my motherboard replacements for overheating I was getting no sound over HDMI. Did loads of software/driver stuff, reinstalling windows etc no luck. Dell replaced the motherboard and problem was instantly fixed.
So, if she's never tried to use it before it could just be dead like mine was.
Edit: When mine -was- working, I just plugged it into the TV with HDMI cable, then right clicked the speaker icon in lower right corner, clicked playback devices, selected HDMI and clicked "set as default". After doing this I would have to close and reopen any programs (e.g. browser/itunes) that I wanted sound from on the TV, but did not have to restart the laptop.

Thank you all so much for your help...
Since your HDMI works, can you tell me which relevant devices appear on your Device Manager and which drivers they have ?
- Video Adapter & version (mine is 285.62 on 8400M GS)
-Sigmatel High Definition Audio Codec (6.10.0.5614 Version) under Sound, Video & game Controllers
-High Definition Audio Controller under System Devices (though vendor ID shows 8086 -> Intel)
Thank you again. -
Hey all - not sure where to post this.... but I had a system exchange on my m1530 and have two power adapters (one oem and one 3rd party) and a hi cap battery (3rd party) that I would like to sell. PM me off list if anyone is interested and sorry if this isn't the right place.

So my XPS 1530 has been near completely silent for the past (nearly) four years. But just today I noticed my fan was running and the computer was feeling a little warm (not unusual) and I blew into the rear vent hole (not unusual for me) to see if it had gotten dusty. Almost immediately it started making a sound it has never made before, a high-pitched whirring noise that is really freaking annoying. Anyone else have this issue? I do have about a month of warranty left so I'm going to see if I can get it fixed, but I'm not sure what they'd be fixing.. This has been a very reliable laptop to this point and I guess I should feel lucky to have gotten as much use out of it as I have, but I'm not ready to replace it just yet.

just poking my nose back in here. odd to see all the complaints of overheating. I put some artic silver ceramique on the CPU and GPU, undervolted the processor and massively overclocked my 8600m (I had a solid 50% boost on ram and gpu) and it still is cool and quiet. my brother uses it now but it still is soldering on

Hi Guys! My borther has an XPS M1530 (with the Nvidia 8600 GT), bought in October 2008. Today, when boot up, it becomes showing green artifacts and it won't boot, even if you connect an external monitor... I think that video card is broken... Avoiding oven trick, is there a way to fix it? Maybe I can extend guarantee calling Dell?
Thanks beforehand for support and sorry for my awful English... -
Call dell to see what they can do, if nothing try oven trick, if nothing buy a replacement motherboard with the 8600m on it

I called Dell and just extended warranty until October 2012 for 165€... In the middle of the next week I'll contact them again for replacing the motherboard...
-
That sounds like a good idea. Good luck and let us know how it works out

guys whats the temperature for the fans to start in m1530?
i've been monitoring lately, usually it goes when it heat up 63-64 C.. but lately its always been 69 C and worse i've seen kicking it up from 73 C
i've cleaned the fans etc, blowing with air cans..and even applied new paste..
and extremele i've oopen up the bottom part.. and still kicks up at 69 C..
any idea? -
I have searched everywhere I know of to find what that little sound has been trying to tell me and have found nothing. I ran a whole series of diagnotic tests that I was albe to find on the machine and it seem to do well. There was one warning about the speed of a fan.
I would appreciate any anwers as to the meaning of the System "beep, beep, beep, clunk", as I am certain that it is trying to tell me something.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. -
lucky me idles at 40 C here, kicks up at 61 C on my M1530..
-
everything running well, is just after i repaste the vga/procc somehow the sensor reads and start the fan at around 69 C.. idle i dont mind, can get as low as 46ish.. but when mostly loading game etc.. max fan (rpm) kicks at 74 C..
sucks.. -
you are one of the lucky survivors, whats your max?

Hi
I had a water spill on my xps L150x and did my mother board in, I ordered a replacement board and fitted it with few problems, fitting my i5 cpu off my damaged board into the new board. All went well till boot up and got error message arrandale cpu not supported on discrete platform. please use clarksfield cpu. Ok after checking up on this it appears that dell made a model with the i7 clarksfield core, and this is obviously the board i now have. My question is if i upgrade/buy a new intel Core i7-740QM Mobile Processor (6M cache, 1.73 GHz) SLBQG cpu and fit it to the board will every thing be ok or will i have another problem, ie with the power supply ect.appreciate any comments thanks -
2. it should work yes

I've had my m1530 since shortly after they came out. My motherboard died about a year ago, but I finally got Dell to replace it for free. I think I have a loose video cable, as the monitor colors go funny every once in a while. I think it's time to finally upgrade though, and I'm thinking about an Alienware m17x.
The design/build quality of the m1530 was top notch though, it's tough to beat. -
Ever considered the Clevo P150EM/Sager NP9150? MYTHLOGIC :: Computers | Service | Support or http://http:/www.xoticpc.com or http://http:/www.lpc-digital.com or http://www.sagernotebook.com
- or check my signature which leads to a whole lot of resellers in Europebut surely the Alienware M17x is also very nice.

Thanks in advance!!! -
Ok guys after full 4 years, my XPS has finally started giving me problems.
In the night I turned it off and it was working absolutely perfect, next morning I tried to boot it up but there was no display, nothing. The power is fine, I could see the touch buttons light up and the HDD indicator is on as well, but there is nothing on the screen.
What could be the problem?
Thanks. -

^^Thanks. I guess my XPS has lived its life. I must look for another laptop.

Anyone upgrade their M1530 to Win8?

Hi everyone,
First post here on Notebook review, so I hope this is the right place in the forum to post this question.
(1) I have an xps m1530 and the MB is dead. It's most certainly the Nvidia GPU issue. I would prefer to replace the MB instead of "torching" it but I only want to replace it with a MB that has integrated intel graphics because I don't want this issue to crop up again in the future. [I don't use it for gaming anymore.]
From what I understand, this model was only offered with a choice of 2 discrete Nvidia graphics cards and it was not offered with intel graphics. If I'm wrong about that please let me know. The m1330 was however offered with the intel graphics card. Is there anyone that successfully replaced the board for the m1530 with an intel graphics board from an m1330? I imagine it wouldn't work but I'm asking anyway. If that won't work, is there any other system (that was offered with intel graphics) which has a board that can be swapped into the m1530?
(2) If getting a board with intel graphics is not an option, do both of the Nvidia chips have the "failing gpu" problem? Mine was configured with the 128MB DDR2 Geforce 8400GS so obviously that one I know firsthand has the issue. Does the 256 MB DDR3 8600M GT GPU also have the same issue?
(3) If there is a better thread for these questions to be posted to, please let me know.
Thank you! -
Hi all,
First post! M1530 owner of 4 years now, not a single issue and I'm hoping it stays that way. T9300/4GB/8600MGT/LED
Intel SSD is under the tree and will be popping it in on Xmas day. -

My old XPSm1530 that I got int 2008 had it's motherboard replaced twice. Even with a 8400 gs instead of the 8600 gt, the motherboard still died. I would like to get it replaced as well but am not sinking more money into it. -

I believe that I am one of (the seemingly) very few people who have had the m1530 without any major gpu issues. I have been using it overclocked for games and undervolted for daily tasks. Only time i touch the gpu is when I clean out the dust from my fan and at the same time change the TIM. Still using the same tube of TIM that I bought 4 years ago. Actually just bought a battery to replace mine that just died.
-
One of the chosen few as they say. It is possible to stay without that GPU problem, if you do not use it to intensly and provide extra cooling. That you stayed without problem using it so intensly is almost a miracle.
Using a coolerstand, copper shims and proper cooling paste will lower the temp with about 10 degrees C but much lower you can not get or you have to take off the cover and leave the bottom open on a cooler stand. He will stay at 40-50 degrees C.
But that is only if you do not travel with it. Futher more I find it one of the smoothest laptops to work with. -
I have traveled with it a lot. Only 2 issues that I've had with it were when I lent it to my wife. First was when the hard drive died (within the 1 year warranty) and was replaced. The second was when she dropped it onto a hard floor and the metal palmrest is dented and separating from the plastic bottom by the hard drive. I have been using arctic silver as TIM, and mostly use a modest overclock that makes it run like an 8700mgt. Higher overclocking for extended use definitely needs a coolerstand. I bought it as a refurb and never bought the extra warranty or installed copper shims. Mine did come with copper heatsinks, and I think that I remember that, surprisingly, some people's came with aluminum heatsinks.

After five years, my Dell wireless 1395 WLAN Mini Card in my XPS M1530 is failing, anyone here that have had an experience with that problem could advise me on a suitable replacement from a suitable vendor?
I am presently using a USB Wireless adapter as a work around.
Thanks,
Kallias -
From what I remember, it's just mini pci-e slot. Try looking up a intel 6300... beastly card

Anyways, I have an Intel 4965 I can ship to you. It is factory OEM pulled from my m1530. Just pm if you are interested!
Keep in mind if you go with an Intel 6300 or similar card that you might need to purchase an adapter with it. Those newer cards are half the size of the standard miniPCUe cards so they will not fit perfectly. Also, the wires do not run long enough to fit comfortably.

Hi!
I would like to change my notebook's HDD to SSD. I read some incompatible problems between m1530 and SSDs.
Please help me to find the right one..
What are the recommended SSDs (128GB) for m1530?

Any help would be appreciated!
I have an M1530 that I am trying to upgrade to an SSD, it's a LiteOn LAT-256M3S that I took out of my ASUS G75VW. I have formatted it and was able to get it to boot, by turning off the Cache Drive and putting the BIOS into ATA mode. It ran ok, But when I put the screws in to hold the drive it just disappeared, (I always unplug and pull the battery before making any changes) the BIOS would not recognize it. After numerous attempts at reseating the drive it FINALLY was recognized again.
Do you know what the proper setup for this drive is?
Do I take the firmware back to A11?
Is there a way to get this drive running under ACHI?
Any other tips to get the best performance?
Thanks! -
Hello,
A12 Bios version ( at least in my case) has an option @ BIOS>Onboard Devices>Sata Operation> ATA or AHCI.
You have to set it to AHCI mode to get the most out of your SSD ( and Trim function).
