Some questions:
1. How do you calibrate sound? Specifically, I would like to tweak the sub woofer settings.
2. Does anyone know of any Photobooth type of software for Windows? I find the Webcam Software which is included, to be very bland.

We are comparing the screen to a Macbook Pro rite now and an iMac... the results are sad. 1645 displays notably better than both of these Macs, but red and green are slightly off.
Here are the images we are comparing on each screen that are loaded in seperate tabs:

some recent pictures from my buddy michaels wedding:

I am happy to report that blacks display far better on the 1645 than a 2009 Macbook Pro or the iMac. When viewing photo intensive websites, the 1645 is really gripping our attention (all things being equal such as brightness set to max, etc.)

Hmm, the flickr link sends me to a weird frog pic. Not the comparison between the 2 laptops.
-
We want screenshots, not kermit the frog collages.
-
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND THAT concludes my liveblog of XPS 1645 vs 2009 Macbook Pro: Death Match Edition!
Some immediate conclusions are that the 1645 screen IS better, but some colors display slightly skewed.
Some expert analysis from a Tyco QA employee is that the colors can be corrected via software and that it is not a hardware defect or anything like that... which is comforting to hear tonight.
Enjoy! -

dchan07 and m1n05underscore4: take a seat and cool off please, it is a laptop, it cannot perform major surgery or anything.
I don't meant to get all Ari Gold on you, but I do not have a camera with me rite now to take comparison shots... which is why I am trying to detail this experience to the best of my ability.
I'll try to snap a few pictures on Tuesday night when I will have plenty of access to a Canon. Is that ok for each of you... or do you need some assistance to change your diaper??? lol jk not. -

@ TerryO'QuinnMedicine
1. Did it come pre-installed with Vista SP1 or Windows 7?
2. Did the vent slit come with 4 or 5 rows? -
I concur, not to call you a liar, but it would be nice as to have some screenshots on the system information. It'd be the ultimate proof to know dell is already shipping out the systems.
-
You ordered on the 27th and got it now?
I ordered on the 25th and mine hasn't shipped. Maybe the i7-820QM's came in earlier?
~Ibrahim~ -
Not only has no one else recieved their i7 SXPS's yet, but so far, no one has even had their order status change to something other than "in production/build phase". And this is coming from people who order before you did (with earlier EDD's too). Hence our doubts...
-
Mine said work in progress like for a week, though when checking the order directly it said: "In production", though a few days ago my status changed to "In production" on both sites. I wonder, is this a sign of progress?
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
My Studio 17 also went from, "pre-production," to "In production" across the board.
As for Terry, I agree. It is a combination of curiosity of a pic of your device driver / system specs and a nagging doubt you actually have a unit.
One quick session with snipping tool and all will be well. -
I brought up this same thing in another thread regarding the RGBLED display and how the colors seem too warm (on a 1640). I compared to the newer 15.6" FHD 1080p LED backlit display, and I totally prefer the 15.6" FHD over the RGBLED.
Others have sworn that their RGBLED display is so unbelievably perfect, but I could never get used to mine (even with color calibration, etc.). Word had it from some that there are differences in the RGBLED panel and some are color-shifted and others aren't.
I'm sticking with the FHD 1080p (cheaper) LCD in the future. As soon as the 1645's hit the Outlet, I'm gettin' one!!
Congrat's, BTW...I'm green with envy! -

-
I hope you do, i want to see how it looks and i also want to see the benchmarks!
-
I don't see what the big deal is, I know several people in our office and a friend who have already received theirs.
Did you order from DSB?? Did you go with the 820QM?
Then you reading this from a Studio XPS 1645! -
Did it come with Win7 pre-installed? what about the heat vent? 4 0r 5 rows? -
I ordered mine from the employee federal page on Sept. 25th. I have a delivery date of 10/26. My status is still listed in production. I would be upset to see others that ordered later on and received theirs before others who ordered early (on announcement day or a day or two later). But for the people who received theirs, congrats and post up some pictures.

Win7 is now listed as the OS choice, does that mean that our orders will be pre-installed with it? I made my order 2 days ago...
-
Did you order before the Win7 option? If so, you get vista....sorry
-
I'm not sure about your order, you should prob' call A rep, for confirmation... and, be sure to get a Case Number emailed to for confirmation of your conversation!
Cin... -
If you order now, then you get Win7, but if you ordered before, you get Vista 64 and the Win7 Free upgrade
-
just ordered mine.
-
I guess I was a good source after all -
What is the difference between "work in progress" and "in production?"
For the people who have received theirs already, I wonder if they were all with the 820QM? -
Not that they have to prove anything, but hey, we're all "family" here, and it's not asking much just to copy/paste a screenshot of their system info screen, so when others ask nicely for some proof and are put off, it is suspicious... -
I dont know. But my ETA is nov 16 GRRRR!!! But I get the $100 gift card and free shipping. So that helps, with that I will pay for Win7 shipping for the "free" upgrade.
-
Well, the reason I asked about the 820QM is because I finally placed an order for Friday (with the only customizations being the 820QM and RGBLED screen) and my estimated shipping day is 11/6... which seems a bit early, given how late this month I placed the order and some of the dates I've been reading here.
Maybe I'm mistaken and the reason for the other delays are the SSD upgrade? -
HOW>!?!?! Not fair! Mine is 16 and placed the order on friday morning!!
-
Which options did you customize and did you order through EPP?
-
I notice yesterday with the 720Q processor and RGBLED screen EDD was somewhere around 11-20. Today with W7 showing up pre-installed orders with the RGBLED screen seem to be shipping on 11-9/11-10 now which is awesome. It has be because of the OS change.

I ordered mine with 4GB of memory, what are you guys ordering yours with? Seems like a pretty high premium to get more than 4GB. Is there any need for more?
-
-
Don't forget you can always keep a card in the media reader for ReadyBoost... 4GB is good, but honestly, with my web-browsing and gaming I go way past 4GB while already consuming 3GB of page file.
Though ReadyBoost isn't a replacement for RAM, it's just something good for when you don't have enough. I'll be testing it out and might post some results. Though I have a feeling Windows 7 will make it so I don't even need it. My old laptop I never had an issue with Windows 7, but Vista on my desktop is just a memory hog.
I will be using a 4GB Kingston CompactFlash card for ReadyBoost. I hope the media card reader is using a fast enough bus (PCI or USB atleast). I have no idea how they are connected on these laptops though. -
