call a rep, in the usa yo could get around 20-30% off from a rep by bargains easily and thats a EXPENSIVE system.
you will never use 8gb and its stupidly priced so bring that to 4gb.

get 3 yrs warranty for the sake of it, the upgrade from 2>3 yrs is barely anything compared to the laptop you speced.

Yeah, no 8GB and no SSD... unless speed is that important to you, then SSD is nice to have.

BluRay is up to you, I wouldnt get the burner. I personally got the BD-ROM since I go on business trips and I like to enjoy a hi def movie on this screen. Otherwise, skip it. I happen to have a small library of discs so I opted for it.

Edit: also, how much do you need that T9800?

    thanks for the replies guys!

But for instance, if I wanted this config, how much/what kind of a discount can I get because I have read that the more you spend, the more of a discount they give.

    Also, few, potentially naive, questions:

    1) Why not bluray? I really want to watch amazing HD on that amazing screen?
    2) Why is 8gb so bad?

Also, THE ONLY reason I am going for the SSD is to reduce heat which is very important for me.

    thx guys

The SSD isn't a bad option, it can just be had cheaper if you buy it separately and install yourself. The 8GB is a weird choice because hardly anybody needs that much memory. Seriously, 4GB is way more than the average user uses, even while gaming. 6GB is only for somebody running many different systems virtually.

Same with the T9800. What are you doing that is so intense that you need a processor that fast? You won't see any big difference between that and a T9500, for instance, unless you are doing INTENSE computer applications. And even then, you will only notice a small incremental difference.

The Blu Ray read drive is an okay option, but why do you want a Blu Ray burner?

Also, people are curious why you would be willing to spend that much money on this system? There are much better systems out there for that kind of money. Really, for under 2000 you can get anything you really need in this system. I got the one in my sig on the outlet for about $1000. If you are looking to spend around $3000 on your laptop, go find something that is top of the line, not a budget high-end multimedia/all-around notebook.

Ill type more later cuz gtg right now. But:

I want to spend $2500 and I was wondering if I can drop the price from 3100 to 2500.

Also, what top-of-the-line laptop is recommended for around $2500 with a screen as good as the XPS16?

I am a sucker for display and I heard that the xps16 has the best display in the market.

When it comes to negotiating, it really depends on the rep. you talk to. Some will throw in a few upgrades, but they will upgrade little things like 3GB to 4GB, not 4GB to 8GB. Same with the Blu Ray writer. They won't upgrade some things that are considered personal preferences. The others they might discount, like hard drive or processor. But I highly doubt you'll get a 3500 dollar system for 2500. 3000 maybe, if you play hard ball and get the right rep.

As for alternative systems, go to the 'What Should I Buy?' forum and fill out an FAQ. They can definitely help you spend some money wisely.

Lol, im sorry for my currently brief replies but Im working right now.

I edited the final price to 3100. Can I get THAT too 2500-2600 because I heard the more you spend, the more of a discount you get. Also, the xps16 has the best screen out there currently, right?

You should probably check to see if you qualify for any university or company discount. Also when you call in to talk to someone, if they can't Tget the price down to something close to 2500-2600, then just have them e-mail you their quote along with their name and extension and then call back and get some one else to also give you a quote. If none can get that close then just pick the best quote that they sent. I was able to get my system wich was priced at 2100 at the time for 1500, so you should be able to get something done. Also definately get the longer warrantee, and with a system that decked out you should also check out the accidental and theift insurance that dell offers. That is one decked out system, and if thats what you want and can afford it, get it, in the end its you that is going to be using this system day in and day out.

thnks fernandez! Do you think the dell rep. can throw in the extented warranty for free or for a good deal? If so, how should I approach the situation with the rep?

guys, the XPS has the best display in the market right?

It all depends on the rep. The one I was talking too said he coulnd offer anything for free, but could give me between 25%-75% discount on upgrades from the base price.

What I did was I did several different system configurations from the different base models they have on sale (you'll be surprised by the diferent prices you get for the same system depending on what base configuration you start from) and then chose the best one of the bunch and saved it to my cart. then i called in and simply said that i had a configuration in my cart and was wondering he know of any other configurations that may be similar but cheaper, and once he started and priced me out a cheaper system i contered with some of the specs that were really important to me not in the configuration he gave and we started slowly adding them on.

Also he would try and upsell me on certain things and I would say if I could also get this at that orice then sure and he would work it in until I had the system I wanted. Of course he can only do so much ( i really wanted the SSD but it was out of my price range even with a small discount he could give, and I tried to get more ram but he coulnd't give any discount on that). Just be nice and ask.

As for the display, from what I have heard the RGBLED on the XPS16 is the best, though I have never seen it myself.

    Thanks man.

So how would you recommend I go about it? Should I max out the laptop the way I want and put it in my cart; and THEN bargain down?

Or should I put a less powerful laptop in my cart, and then wait for him to offer me discounts on upgrades?

Well i have the configuration I wanted in my cart and the configuration he first gave me was less powerfull and we built it back up. Just max out the different base configurations, save the best one then ask him for a similar configuration at a lower price. If after you can't get anything near what your looking for then just ask if he could bring the price down to the 2500 range or as close as he can. Just be nice and strait forward and again it all depends on the rep you get.

Depends. It's the best in terms of being bright and high-contrast but apparently the colour can be very inaccurate. Puremind posted a really good thread about it a while ago with tests:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=352156
It looks very good, but if you needed accuracy, possibly not. I don't have one myself though.

Heres a coupon I found last night before I ordered my xps16. I built it online then called to see if I could get a better deal talking to a sales rep. He only gave me the $379 off. When I told him about the $504 him and his manager were both shocked and say they had never seen it before. I still got the savings but they claim they cant add anything else onto the savings because im already saving so much.
