I couldn't register my laptop for My Dell downloads, got the error message that the service tag is not recognized. I raised a support call with Dell, who eventually told me that because my L502x was bought from the Dell UK outlet, it wasn't eligible for My Dell Downloads. Has anyone else faced this issue?

Dell did agree to send me all the software on DVD, which I've not got, but I would rather have access to the downloads if it's possible.

    Thanks

Got mine from PC World last month. Registered on the Dell site and it recognised the Service Tag no problem. I don't think there could be a case where Dell do not recognise their own Service Tags?
I do not have the full build order with part numbers on the Dell site which some people on the forums report when they order directly from Dell. But I have access to all the Dell software and it provides 3 downloads. To be honest, I did a clean Windows install and did not use any of the Dell crud. It's just a waste of space to me. Just went to the drivers section and used the main Intel and chipset drivers.

Unusual. Service tags always recognized for laptops I bought from the Outlet, and that is lots of them.

Sometimes service tags take a few days to be recognized in the downloads system. How long have you had the system?

Hi RacecaR. We're hijacking this thread to talk off topic. But recommend you do some background reading on this in the forums. It's good learning.
    Some main things are:
    1. Ring Dell to order the Win 7 system disk, pay £12 or so to get it posted.
    2. Finalise all your HW upgrades, memory, disks, so that you build on to a final build. I bought new SSDs to get a silent quick system, but that's expensive (less so at the moment as normal HDDs are temporarily expensive because of the flooding in Thailand). Best to keep your original Dell HDD in case it needs to go back, and it's the weakest part of the system anyway (so probably best not to use it, unless you have no cash).
    3. Download all the latest drivers for each HW component. Do your research at this stage. Use Dell or latest manufacturer release. Make sure you are clear on every single one. I found (later) I needed the Dell Intel HD3000 driver as I got a flashing screen when on battery.
    4. Remove old disk, fit the new. Fit memory, if required. Boot from Win 7 disk and load new Win build. From USB, install Intel inf chipset drivers, HD3000 Graphics, Intel RST, USB3, Dell Quickset keys, Synaptics Touchpad, Dell ST Motion Sensor, then WiFi, and depending on your specific hardware, Realtek Audio, Quanta Webcam, Nvidia Graphics drivers. Do all this locally from USB stick without connecting to the internet. Check in Device Manager that everything is OK, no Exclamation marks.
    - Decide if you want to take a system image of this basic system -
    5. Install your chosen AntiVirus. I had a deal with the laptop to have Norton 360 v5, which seems to be fine these days and more or less tops the charts (v6 soon will be better). Do the updates on-line to get the latest protection.
    6. Install your main applications, e.g. Browser, MS Office. Small apps can wait until after the Win 7 updates.
    7. Install Win 7 updates, several times. Keep installing and rebooting until you have them all. Let Windows Update decide which you need and in what order. Be patient, especially if you need to load SP1 as well.
-I took my system image at this stage -
    8. Install your other applications. E.g. music, games, utilities, etc.
    9. Enjoy your clean, quick and quiet laptop :)

Sorry for relying in the wrong thread. Maybe there is better place to put this. The L702x thread is toooooo large now....

Been a few months now, and after having notified Dell of the problem would have expected that they could have sorted the issue with the service tag. I seem to remember reading somewhere about having to use IE and a certain version of .net framework installed for Dell to be able to recognize the service tag.

I was more interested to know whether anyone else had been told by Dell that outlet laptops are not eligible for my Dell Downloads? Sounds like a pretty lame excuse for not being able to figure out why I was getting the error message.

    Cheers

A few months? Should be good by now then...

I use Firefox and have had no issues with getting service tags to work, fyi.

Dell's phone people are clueless. They just spout out whatever comes to mind I swear...one guy on these forums was told that unless he ordered an SSD with his laptop, it would only have support for SATA II............
