So I overclocked my GPU to 700/900 and thought I was fine because my temps never got above 75 and ran 3dmark great. I thought I could even push it a little further.

Then I ran the atitool artifact test and got all kinds of yellow dots, so i pushed it down to 680/885 and got rid of all the yellow dots. Ok, Im sad I had to go lower, but I want safe stability.

Everything runs great. Except when my ribbons screensaver comes on. After a couple of minutes, my compute reboots. My GPU temp is below 60, cpu in the 40s.

So, I log back on and try to change the screensaver to Aura. When I click the Aura button on Screensaver Settings, it reboots. I do this about 5 times just to make sure I can duplicate the problem. It is only when I switch to Aura though. Switching to any other screen savers does not cause a reboot.

So only Ribbons after a while(5 mins), or Aura immediately give me a reboot with the overclock. But I can stress test the CPU or GPU for an hour with no problems or artifacts.

    What gives?

Does it work when not overclocked and/or with stock drivers??

Yes, stock works. (475/702) Even a little oveclock causes this to happen.

Would any other overclockers try to start with one screen saver, and then click on the Aurora screensaver and let it sit there a minute or two? Im gonna download the Crysis demo this weekend to try it out with the overclocks. I just dont see this screensaver being harder on the GPU/CPU than Orthos/atitool/3dmark.

Ill try out some other drivers too. Im currently using 174.31.

Ran Crysis and I had no problems playing with the 700/900 gpu overclock. Why does the Auro/ra screen saver immediatly reboot my computer even with just a tiny overclock

That is pretty dang intersting. Wish I could give a answer.

One thing people really need to remember, is that we only have thermal monitors on our GPU cores. NOT the memory. So while you may be reporting good temps, your GPU memory could be frying itself to a crisp.

This screen saver instantly reboots the laptop. Even when its the very first thing I do when I turn on the laptop. I dont think its a temp thing.

Crysis, orthos, 3dmark, atitool artifact all run perfectly. Im just gonna avoid the screensavers but I really liked ribbons...

I really wish others would try this out and let me know.

    Thanks,

Just one bump to see if anyone else using Vista with an overclocked 8600mgt would try this out.

Ill probably roll back to Vista home edition and try it again.

And if the problem is still there, ill exchange it. The fingerprint reader has worked 1 out 100+ times, and there is a significant amount of light bleed from the bottom of the LCD.

An update. I did a clean install with Vista Home, and there is no reboot. Maybe an ultimate problem? But I also used the newest Dell 8600 drivers(175.?) when I had been using the 174 m1330 drivers before.

Going to do another fresh Ultimate install with newest drivers, in case it was a bad install.
