Hello everyone, happy fourth of july for those who celebrate. I think I have ran into a problem. I recently OC'ed my Graphics card, 8600MGT GDDR-3, XPS M1530. Here is the problem. I am using RivaTuner to overclock my card. The problem is though, really no matter what clock settings I pick, when running ANY game, the computer will just shut down. Note: This happens after about 5-10 seconds of playing, with the GPU temp normal, so I dont think it's a heating issue. I have tried many clock settings that people have reported were very stable, and yet my system will shut down. Is this some kind of protection? Something I need to disable? Maybe my computer will shut down if the clocks are to high? I have tried everything from as low as 600/800 and as high as 690/880. Yet it always shuts down almost instantly upon loading a 3d world, this happens on any game. I was thinking maybe it has something to do with the drivers, or the some kind of clock protection. My current drivers are, 174.31. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks a bunch guys, have a good and safe holiday weekend!

174.31 should not cause this kind of problem. I'm assuming those are the stock Dell drivers, and that you haven't fiddled with them?
How about dumping Rivatuner for OC and trying nTune instead?
Got same notebook, same GPU, same driver, and it OCs very well with nTune. 700/1000 np. -
Those are actually the stock video drivers for the m1330, I heard they were very good, could this be the problem? I'll try Ntune, also. Thanks.

Not every GPU (or CPU) will OC the same. Sometimes you get a good chip that OC's like a champ, and other times you'll get a chip that just won't want to OC for crap. Other times you'll get an amazing chip that you OC the dickens out of.

Is there anything I can try along with Ntune? Or is it most likely a chip problem? Would trying another driver help maybe?
-
Ok quick update, I did try Ntune, but to no avail, still get a system shutdown 3 seconds into any 3d application.

Looks like your GPU just can't take those higher clocks. DFI Fan is right, not every GPU overclocks the same, some can take way higher clocks, some can't, and some can't even OC at all because the stock clocks are probably the highest they can achieve.
I use ATI Tools to OC on my setup, but it's on XP. I'm not sure if this application will work on Vista, if that's what you're using. ATI Tools is especially useful as there's a built-in artifacts locator tool which scans a 3D rendering for artifacts while you're running higher GPU clocks. Very useful! -
Ok thanks very much. One last question, since i'm under warrenty is it even possible or worth it to have dell come out and change my gpu chip?
Overclocking Problem.
