I have just acheived these clocks:
    Core: 875mhz (max)
    Shader: 1750 (max)
Memory: 1100 (not tried any further yet)
Has anyone else got these speeds yet?

Technically, yes. However, the increase in power consumption will be mostly negligible without a voltage increase.

Hm i think that´s not exactly right.
Temperature/Consumption scales very good with the frequency of the chip. However(as you said) it scales in square with increase in voltage. Both combined will take great effect on both =)
But measure yourself: Download Batterybar and Furmark or MSI Kombuster (or any Programm which produces an constant load on the gpu) then you look up your power consumption and go step by step higher in the frequency.

I'm having problems running benchmark tests. I have an asus k53sv with 2gb gt540m so i should be getting more or less the same 3dmarks as the guy above but i only get 3000+ 3dmarks. i've been looking for a way since yesterday to force 3dmark to test the nvidia card but to no avail.

@cornpoop how did you force 3dmark to use the nvidia card?

this is a screen cap after taking a benchmark test using 3dmark 11. during the test the GPU was being used at 99 percent but the core clock, shader clock, and memory clock are not moving. i think there's something wrong with my video card.

graphics score of that run was 255
    physics score was 2918
    combined score was 250

All I did was go to Nvidia Control Panel and I selected the graphics card on both 3D settings and Physx. Do that before starting the program

okay i got it to work but this baffle me O__O
    default(672/900/1366) = 8433
    OC'd(800/950/1600) = 8520
when i set the cpu to 1000 it start to artifact. but still, the difference is under 200. mind=blown

Check if you have gt540m installed correctly. When I fried my gt540m due OC windows didn't recognized it at all.

Unsure why but my card likes to get way above 90 degrees even without overclocking... It's a fairly new computer, and I don't restrict the fans or anything like that.. Anyone else experiencing similar temps?

Take it somewhere where they have air compressor ( tyre shop for example ) and give it a good blast with compressed air that should clean the dust build up inside and lower your temps , you can repaste while you on it ( dont be scared of it it is actualy very easy ).

Compressed air is a great and cheap solution. It should be done regularly to avoid overheating. Laptop is working almost all the time so it can be really dusty inside. If you know where I can find ASUS k53sv disassembly guide I would repaste it cos it gives a great effect.

I did few runs on the 3Dmark 06 , just for the fun of it and that we have more numbers to compare .
    intel hd3000 graphics score - 4402
    stock GT540M score - 9449
    OC 800,1600,1000 , GT540M score - 11020

Room temperature 23~C GPU max. reached temperature during test 71~C

Average results for me , but i am very happy with it especialy the temperatures - 69 most of the time .
    i hope this helps .

mine is 10450 3dmark 06 with my ASUS k53sv oced to 840/1680/1040. Max temp. during test was 83 Celsius degrees. When I set my clocks to high I can see bad result in 3d mark rather than artifacts.

Every silicon its a litle bit different , some run hotter than others but still perform good some are cool but dont like OC-ing , its just about how lucky you are , what matters is that they all work wery good on stock settings , be carefull and dont kill your gpu , even if you only reach the GT 550 speed , you should be happy with that .

The average score in 06 for the GT555M is 10585.1 (41%of tested machines)
you are nearly on par with the 555

i'm pretty devastated cause i was expecting too much. does updating the card driver do anything? i'm being forced to lay low on the clocks since it's hot here in this d*mned tropical country. pretty good in the games tho, playing skyrim on max settings+hd textures+fxaa injector on default clocks i get like 12-15 fps, overclocked i get 20-25, laggy but good enough.

also, to those who have k53sv, is your laptop the i7 and 8gb ram? cause mine's the i5 and 4gb one. maybe if i see some k53's like mine with results like mine i'll be contented :D

The people getting 9500 3DMark06 scores on stock 540m's are probably running at lower resolutions than 1280 x 1024, since their screens do not support that resolution. At 1280 x 1024, a stock 540m gets around 8400-8500 on 3DMark06.

Mine ASUS k53sv is i5 and 4gb ram. Its my second asus, cos I fried my first asus gpu in first week when I bought it. I oced him a little, not more than 800 core and 950 memory and it died without any warnings while playing witcher 2. After restart windows cannot recognize the gpu. Fortunately I gave it back to the shop where I bought it and they gave me a new one after couple of days. In the end I am happy with it, they gave me a model that likes to be oced as I can see.

the witcher 2 is a very heavy game but i used to play it maxed out graphics except for one(ubersampling) on default clocks with a good 30-35 fps with ubersampling on goes down to 9-15. and playing battlefield 3 with ultra settings and vsync on i get 28-33 fps. i even force settings through the nvidia control panel. it just blows my mind that i can't play skyerim even when oc'd. imo battlefield 3 has the best graphics so far then crysis 2 then witcher 2, skyrim is so far below. i'm starting to think that the lag is from all the mods i have(almost 2gb)

I have Witcher 2 and for some reason with its lowest settings it only runs 7-15fps!! I dont understand why..... I have the lates drivers and have set both globl and the game EXE to the Nvidia card.....
Not only that for some reason 3dmark 11 wont detect the nvidia card -____-

I have a problem with my gt540m for some reason it seems to kind of overheat it goes to 96 degrees celsius with or without overclock i even tried downclocking it still the same result.

I have a acer 5750g (i posted a few pages back some results) with a I7-2670QM 1GB gt540m 8GB DRR3 mem. I even used a cooler master U2 cooler to see if there is any difference (only my cpu went down by 2-5 degrees celsius)
    .
    Any reply would be helpful.

You need patch 1.2 to play this game without lag. Its best idea to patch it to the latest 2.1 Also you can try to delete 3d vision driver if you have one. Turn off ubersampling, anty-aliasing, SSAO and vertical sync. With medium settings I have almost all the time 30 fps with my oced gt540m 840/1040. Its playable and still looks nice.

maybe you didn't set the game to use the nvidia card. right click on desktop and click nvidia control panel there are settings there that can boost your game.

Hey guys i have a question!

Im getting 23FPS on 1080p (Low settings) on BF3 which i think looks great!

I want to get it to around 30 and im thinking of OCing my GT 540M

What values should i look to OC it to for a mild overclock i dont want too much heat or anything like that, alos looking into getting a collermaster U3 and wondered if they would help keep the GPU and CPu cool?

Thanks im completely new to the overclocking!!

I think overclocking the memory would give you the best results. Try going from 900 to 1000 in 25Mhz intervals.

Are the 285.62 drivers the best for general use and light gaming? Those are the latest non-beta drivers i could find on the Nvidia site.

A bit Off topic: Did anyone else find a drop in the WEI score for desktop aero, after installing the latest Intel HD graphics drivers (from Intel site)? I know that WEI is not a very good benchmark, but it does show that somethings been changed, but I havnt been using it long enough to say if desktop performance is lowered. I'm using an i7 2670QM, I think the score went from 5.7 to 5.4. Can anyone confirm this?

    Hello folks !

I'm achieving stable results for 540m with following clocks :
    Laptop : Lenovo Z570 i5 2450,8 GB DDR3,GT540M DDR3(2GB)

Core : 850 mhz(no artifacts,lock-ups,crash or freeze and I did not tried mhz over 850 yet)
Memory : 1080 mhz(1080 is the max mhz that lets me O/C with Nvidia System Tools,EVGA,MSI Afterburner, etc.)
    GPU temp : 70~ C (GT 540M 2 GB DDR3)
    CPU temp : 85~ C (Core i5 2450 3.1mhz Turboboost)
    3D Mark 2006 : 9750~
    3D Mark 2011 : P1375~

I can smoothly play BF3,Skyrim,Crysis,Deus-EX HR with 1366X768(native) with high/ultra settings without AA

From what I read from the forums these are good O/C mhz, temp and scores.I really would not like to go further in order not to damage anything but I'm curious to experiment so do you have any suggestions to go further for Core and Memory or should I leave it like that?

    Thanks in advance

    I picked up my L502x a few weeks ago, i7-2670QM, 8 gig ram, gt540M 2GB and thought I'd run a few benchmarks:

    Standard clock:
    Nvidia 285.62 drivers
    Free 3dMark06 - 8337
    Free 3dMark11 - 1118

Due to this forum I thought I would try overclocking it (mildly):
    Core: 740MHz
    Memory: 980Mhz

Which has bumped it up to 9126 in 3dMark06. I then played skyrim for two hours without issues, jumping back and forwards to the nvidia system monitor I couldnt see the temp even get into the 80's.

    Hi everybody,

As I'm new to overclocking staff, I'd like to ask you what are the save temperatures for GPU and CPU in my Acer 5750g (core i5 2410m, gt 540m, 8gb ddr3). After reading this article cursorily i decided to use Nvidia System tools, and Everest Ultimate to control the temperatures. Is it a good choice?

    Thanks for advice.

    Hi hulahdusza.

For the best experience , use MSI Afterburner to overclock and HWMonitor or Open Hardware Monitor to monitor your temperatures.

    Good luck :)

I decided to give overclocking a shot with little experience a couple years ago with my 9800GTX+ desktop build. I used MSI Afterburner to see in game GPU temps. I'm running at Core: 800MHz, Memory: 1000MHz, and my temps raised maybe 3-4 degrees C.

So now I'm hovering around 80C while playing Armed Assault 2 for a few hours, vs. running around 75-77C stock. My i7-2720 is still running very hot regardless of the OC when gaming, but that's aside the point. Are those numbers reasonable, both the frequencies and temps?

that should be good enough anything over 80 for me is kind of dangerous though mine peaks at 81 but not anymore, try upgrading your drivers, they can boost performance alot. i used to play skyrim 15-23fps on overclocked gt540m 850/975 i think using 285.63(not sure) driver then i upgraded to 295 driver and i got +10 fps, +5 without the overclock

i have one request though. anyone able to give me some info on how to open my k53sv-a1...i can access the RAM/HDD very easily but cant seem to get access to the rest of the hardware. i want to repaste the GPU/CPU..and maybe do some heatsink modding to lower my current temps.

oh, what are people these days to repaste? last time i did some research it was as3 compound as one of the top compounds to use...is it still so these days?

finally got my asus k53sv-xp1 apart last night...wasnt an easy one to "crack" open, hehe. anyways, i repasted with as5, as i didnt have ic7 that everyone loves to use around here. temps went down 3-4c on the i5-2410m cpu and pretty much the same on gt 540m video card. inside was pretty clean..laptops only a few months old so i didnt have to mess around too much.

on a second note, the TIM asus uses is very hard and pasty...also like clay. im surprised it was doing a decent job helping cool the cpu/gpu.

oh also, question for those that have done the heatsink mod to their heatpipes: How much of a temperature drop do you see, and what compound do you use to stick the heatsink to the heatpipes?

Yeah 80-85c on the CPU and GPU is totally normal. The CPU is what causes the gpu to heat up. Otherwise the gpu will run cool. On eurocom laptops they only hit 70-75 on CPU and gpu on similar chips since both chips have a dedicated fan and heatsink. I can't wait to be able to volt-mod the gt540m.
