When I ping the router sometimes I get extreme packet loss (like, only 1 out of 4 is successfully received back). This comes and goes, sometimes it's fine (no packet loss) and other times the wireless becomes horribly slow (significant packet loss). Other computers in the house are fine, so I assume it isn't a problem with the router (a Dlink DIR-615).
Any ideas what could be causing the problem? The wireless is the Intel 5300.

Is the part num 430-2955 for the intel wireless card ?
-
Not sure. How do I check this (is it in device manager?).
-
Check your invoice. I m asking you that because it seems like there is a problem with the intel 5300 wireless card...Check the XPS 1645 Discussion thread.

Try reinstalling the drivers from Intel's website (not Dell's).

P.S. Try Dell's first, then try Intel's. -
Just checked the email with my order on it and the part number is indeed 430-2955. What does this mean?

Hmm, so what should I do then? Call Dell and order a replacement? Will they just ship it to me? I'm sure I can install it myself.

The thing is I'm not sure if this applies for the 1640...Try to make a new XPS 1640 and choose the intel 5300 wifi card. Check if they changed the part number of the wifi card.

We don't know. But, AFAIK, the 1640 used the Intel 5300 for a long time and no issues crept up: ergo my last post.
