Just got my new L502x with the i7 2630QM, and thought I'd run a few tests before I sell my L501x with an i5 460M. I suspect I didn't do something right, and perhaps my L501x's numbers are a bit skewed since i've been using it for a few months, versus the L502x which is brand new out of the box.

    specs:
    L501x: i5 460M, 6gb ram, 500gb hard drive, 420M Video card (1gb)
    L502x: i7 2630QM, 6gb ram, 500db hard drive, 525M video card (1gb)

    Passmark Scores:
L501x: 1334.7 (I saw an error message tell me that my video card must support 4x antialiasing, and it doesn't.)
    L502x: 1587.3

    3DMark06
    L501x: 6234
    L502x: 7589

Anyone else do a similar test? I expected there to be larger variance between the two.

Also, does anyone know how the scores are generated on cpubenchmark.net? I thought i was running the same benchmark test, but my numbers are in a completely different range. they claim the i7 should pull 6317 vs 2641 for the 460M.

I don't think you are using the same Passmark CPUMark benchmark that they are using on cpubenchmark.net. Make sure you are using cpumark and that it is the correct version.

Benchmarks are a fickle thing, unless you use the same settings for all tests, they really aren't comparable. For instance, your 3dmark06 scores seem about right assuming you used the default setting of 1280x1024, which is only possible if you have a screen capable of such resolutions. We often see people saying the score is low because they run the test at a lower resolution due to their screens inability to use 1280x1024.

OK, I just checked out the latest passmark benchmark software. You are using the total passmark rating, cpubenchmark.net is only using the portion that tests the cpu. The cpumark score is only one of several tests combined to calculate the passmark rating.

Also, make sure you setup passmark to use the discrete graphics and both laptops are using the same power profile.

I just ran the passmark performance test on my L502x (specs in sig) and came up with the following:

    Passmark Rating: 1655
    CPUMark result: 7768

I know from previous tests that my GT540M scores around 8300 in 3dmark06 at a default resolution of 1280x1024

Also, I received an error after the DX10 passmark test saying that it was unable to unload something or other but that it wouldn't affect the benchmark results.

@Dsutton--If you check the alienware m11x forum, the m11x R2 scores over 8k in 3dmark06. I think you are scoring too low for it to be correct. I don't have a XPS but you may want to get some assistance and run the 3dmark06 bench again.

    Good Luck,

    StevenX

That would be because the M11x has to run 3dmark06 at 1280x768 NOT the default standard of 1280x1024. :)

    From my post above:
