I have just received my Penryn xps m1530 about 10 minutes ago. Did some tests on it and seems pretty fast. I don't think there is much improvement on the heat issues. It still heats up quite a bit on the left hand side of the palm rest.

    Penryn T9300 (2.5ghz)
    3gb DDR2 667mhz
    320GB 5400rpm
    8600GT DDR3 256mb
    6 cell battery
    1440x900

The driver used for this test was the most recent one from the dell website. Will try different drivers a bit later. I got 59 more points compared to my old spec (in my sig)

Shouldn't my 7200 RPM hard drive score a better deal than a 5400 RPM drive? Or are they measuring the bandwidth transfer rate?

Or did Dell just give me a 5400 RPM hard drive and told me it's 7200 RPM? :realmad:

I am using the TurboMemory thingy with a 2GB SD card, I wonder if that affects the performance? I thought it should actually increase performance? :D

320GB 5400RPM is now as fast, if not faster, than 7200RPM, so no point for 7200RPM. there are review over the net to prove this. do a search.

Not really about the speed or processing power on the Penryns, but the smaller chip that uses less power increasing battery life and the reduced heat which is causes the most wear on general electronics.

The less battery life is only about 5 % and I've heard they put out roughly the same amount of heat.

Ok first of all using a mainly GPU oriented benchmark (3DMark06) to measure the processor performance difference is not going to give the best results. Try wPrime32 (CPU benchmarking program) or even PCMark05.

The left hand palm rest will ALWAYS get hot because that's where the hard drive is located, it has NOTHING to do with the processor.

fullycharged, the reason you get 4 point something and the T9300 gets 5.1 is because it manages memory differently resulting in an increase for the WEI score for RAM.

As for the heat at idle my T9300 sits idle at 33 C while a family members M1330 with T5450 idles at 46 C so penryn is definitely a LOT cooler.

You'll notice in one test they use a 2.6ghz Merom against an equivalent 2.6ghz Penryn which results showed a 6.4% increase in performance at the same processor speed as well as a 16% increase in battery life (about 15 minutes, granted it was while doing actually work).

A couple questions for the collective--------

Pardon my ignorance, but does this mean a reformatted hard dive? This gives a better RAM score?

What do you think is the bottleneck in RAM performance for the 1530? The RAM speed, amount of RAM, or other?

Do you think 4GB of RAM will make some performance difference?

I'm getting ready to order a 1530 this week with the same CPU and GPU, (T9300, 8600) but wondering if getting 4GB of RAM might improve the RAM score and overall performance. (I realize that only 3.2-3.5 of it will be actually used by the system).

Reformat means a clean install of Vista (or any other operating system). Basically a clean install will get rid of all the bloatware it comes pre-loaded with and thus increase performance and in turn the WEI RAM score.

Whether you order 3GB or 4GB the RAM score will be the same as the test isn't based on how much RAM but the speed of what you have. However 4GB will be slightly better compared to 3GB if you plan on running lots of RAM hogging applications.

Thanks for your thoughts. Would 4GB of RAM improve game performance?
I understand game performance to be primarily a function of the GPU, although the CPU and RAM do a role.

I don't plan on doing things like photoshop on my notebook. The biggest strains on my system will be playing games and when I hook it up to my 40 HDTV to watch home movies and surf the net. Would 4GB of RAM make any difference for those two situations?

    hi corujo712,

I just want to enquire how to go about returning the laptop for a upgrade. Was it a promotion or you just sent it in to upgrade to the new penryn t9300. Or is it only a promotion available in your country? Hope to hear a reply thanks ;)

I had to pay a $99 restocking fee to send my old xps back and ordered a completely new system. At the time of ordering, there was a free upgrade from T8300 to T9300 and 3 year dells platinum for $55 and Macaffee 15 month subscription (which i wont be using)

The processor wouldn't make much difference on the 3dmark06. Here is PCmark05, still doesn't seem to make any difference

PCMark05 isn't really suitable for these new processors, using PCmark Vantage should give you a better indication.

sorry curojo, just one more question. You got the extra RAM, extra hard disk space and newer processor for the same price as your previous XPS m1530? wow sounds like a great deal if u only had to pay the 100bucks restocking fee.

Hooking your TV up will not cause an explosion of RAM to be used, it will hardly change if at all.

Personally I would stick with 3GB I've got 4GB in my system and I only have access to 3069MBs anyway! 3GB's is more than enough for modern gaming.

    Intel T9300 (2.5ghz)
    8600GT GDDR3 256mb
    3gb DDR2
    200gb 7200rpm hitachi hts7220
    1680x1050 Samsung screen
    3Dmark06 - 4130 marks with std core/mem using 174.31 nbf mobileforce drivers
OC - i havent done yet

i have also tried stock dell drivers which gave 3900 marks
and 169.09 drivers which gave 4001 marks

why am i getting 500+ marks lower than everyone else?

i have windows set to performance -visuals off
    turned off indexing
activated performance on my hard drive
    formatted and reinstalled vista

    any tips guys??

    harv and swd,
I noticed that your screens are both 1680x1050, which may be the causation of your lower scores.
Have you set the running resolution in 3dmark06? I think if you set them to be 1280x800, your scores will increase to 4500.

thanks for the replies guys, no i definately have it on power setting as high performance, also the res i run in 3dmark is default 1280x800, still people with the t7500 and less specs are getting better marks. its not a huge deal but just wondering why?
i am wondering if its because of the scaling that it has to do from 1680x1050 down to the native res of the 3dmark, but i have tried lowering desktop res and made 0 difference...i love computers they are so mysterious sometimes haha

    3DMark06 - 4370
still think drivers could improve; running V64

    CPU: 5.3
    RAM: 4.8
    GFX: 5.9

    rofl**** no differance.

Ok set my resolution down and ran the test when I first booted the machine cold and I still only got 3971.

I just installed doom3 and ran the fps. In the tests ran by Notebook check from Jacks signature they got 99.9 fps. I got on the same settings 62 fps.

and there system had only 2m of ram and a 7250. I should have been much higher.

First off. I am amazed this machine can run doom3 on ultra high setting :)
Secondly I forgot how beautiful doom3 is.

Any thoughts on squeezing a little more speed out of this?

I'm having the same problem as Harv with the same setup but with 4gb of ram instead. My laptop sees 3582mb's of ram and I score 5.1 for memory in WEI in case anyone is curious. Point is though I've formatted, set to high performance, and reinstalled all drivers using 169.09 from laptopvideo2go and I only score 4000. I did notice though that when people run 3dmark06 it lists NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT as their video card but when I run my 3dmark06 it says I have a NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GS and can't score anywhere above 4000. Though under my device manager (when I received the computer and after I formatted) says I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. Any idea what's happening?

My M1530 with T8300, 3 GB Ram and 8600 GT is scoring around 3800 with default everything. Although I note that ORB is reporting my video card as a 8600 GS. NB my device manager says 8600 GT. Is there a common thread evolving here?

Its odd, everything says my computer has a GeForce 8600M GT except when I upload my results to ORB. Even 3dmark06 says I have a GeForce 8600M GT. Only solution I can think of is to use a program to determine the clockspeed of the video card to see if its the GS or the GT. Does anyone have any program they'd recommend for that? Also would love it if it could tell me if my gfx memory was GDDRII or GDDRIII. Starting to worry that DELL might've screwed a few of us.

Even using the old stock driver you can simply exceed 4000 points without OC at 1280 x 800 resolution

    174.20 driver
    3Dmark06 score: 4518
    SM2.0 score: 1807
    HDR/SM3.0 Score: 1720

    174.31 driver

Considering that 3dmark and device manager reports it as GT I would have to guess its a glitch in the ORB report. Anyone recently getting ORB to report there card as GT?

Also I got my score up from 3962 to 4235 just by changing my driver to 7431. I have not done a clean install of vista, just running it as Dell set it up.

    I have 2 questions:

In the setting part of 3dmark what is the resolution set at? Mine is set at 1280x1024

And what do you set your screen at? Mine is at 1680x1050

    Thanks

Download GPU-Z and make sure the bandwidth is being reported as 22.5 GB/s. I doubt dell is shipping 8600 GS cards since the only two they offer are 8400 GS and 8600 GT. The scores aren't that far off the norm - much higher than a GS would report.
