back when the L701x was new, they shipped the laptop with what I can only describe what looks like "shrink wrap" covering the the grill of the subwoofer. It's hard to see and you have to scratch the subwoofer cover, and if it is present, it will peel off as a very thin clear plastic. As to why they did this, I guess it was to keep dust to a minimum. I do hope this is the case for you.
And if it is, don't feel bad, there were several of us who didn't find this cover for a couple of months

The same plastic film in on the L702x in case some of you did not spot it.

Thank you as I am aware of it but it does not block the holes on the subwoofer grill so I'm not going to bother much about it though.

Thanks for the heads up. I should be receiving my L702x on Monday. Does this film effect the sound at all? I would probably just leave it on as well if it doesn't.

It doesn't affect the sound at all since the film covers the sub woofer perfectly without blocking it. I didn't notice there was film there for two months until it started peeling off =(

They do this to keep from scratching smooth surfaces until it is received by the consumer. On the laptop, constantly being moved around, handled, etc -- it's gonna come loose soon enough.

Protective plastic film has been used on electronics for decades. Essentially any clear plastic/electronic display has 'em, too. They even do it on new cars these days.

And as others have said, the film is perforated exactly like the subwoofer, so it would not affect performance regardless.
