I tried running the laptop through a 53" widescreen HDTV via an HDMI cable. But the laptop screen doesn't fit, so to speak, on the TV screen and so parts of it are cut off. I'm sure it's just a settings issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

Go to Control Panel - Nvidia Control Panel and there you must navigate to Display -> Adjust desktop size and position

Have a play with the settings. When happy click 'Apply'

    Same with my TV.

For me, I had to switch the area settings on my TV from "Normal" to "Full pixel" and it fit perfectly. I didn't adjust desktop size on my PC at all.

I had the same issue for a long time. But for me the solution were not the laptop settings but the tv settings. In the tv menu there was a special setting pc hdmi mode which was turned off. When I turned it on, everything fitted perfectly!
