According to a Consumer Reports survey over the (EDIT 2003-07) year period, Lenovo's are (EDIT more reliable than Dell, but not significantly, and, during 2006-07), their technical support is second only to Apple. However, that was probably based mostly on Lenovo's business laptops. It is hard to say anything about the reliability of the Y510. I don't know if it is made by the same company as their business laptops.

According to Consumer Reports, Dell (EDIT) technical support is better than average. I get the impression from NBR forums that the problem that most commonly occurs with the M1530 is graininess of some screens.

The Y510 a nice looking laptop, but a few things concern me: the integrated graphics card (Intel X3100 on the 15.4"), no HDMI out, and most importantly, this is a 1st gen product from Lenovo. It's very different from their current lines so I would need to "wait and see" for a while before committing.

The Lenovo 3000 N Series looks OK, but nothing very special about it. In a head-to-head comparison with the m1530, you're definitely losing certain features and enhancements, so if costs are equal I would definitely go for the m1530.

Depending on your needs, you might consider a Dell Latitude D830 or Lenovo Thinkpad T61 or R61... both are really built to last, and the Latitude comes with a 3-year warranty standard.
