I am considering purchasing an XPS 1530 for both gaming and business use/travel and am having a hard time deciding which screen to purchase? I do play various simulation games and know that the 8600gt gpu is a low/mid level card that would run games and look better at lower native screen resolutions (if not now, then within the next year or two.) I am planning to keep this computer for about 3-4 years. On the other hand, I do like having more information fit unto a screen for web browsing and general typing work.

Should I go with the 1440x900 LCD/LED screen or stay with the lower 1280x800 screen?

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards.

1440*900 is ideal for 15.4 inch screen. I have a 1280*800 and regret getting it. If you cannot afford the LED option on the 1440 then go for the CCFL 1440. Avoid the 1280...my personal opinion.

I agree - 1440x900 LED all the way. You can afford the LED! It's an awesome investment and it's an awesome screen - I could never go back to CCFL after having LED.
1440x900 is a great midpoint, is a reasonable resolution for games, gives you real estate without making things too hard to see - the only downside is it can't play movies at 1080p without scaling them down - not a big deal though IMO on such a small screen.

If you have the money for LED then definitely splash it! :D
But even otherwise with the CCFL also,it should be fine.No problem.
1440 is actually the best resolution for a 15.4 1280 is terrible and 1680 makes things too hard to view. Hats off to Dell for offering that option.

in three to four years, you have to game at 1024*768 or 960*560. so get the higher res screen.

Games and movies don't look bad on non native resolutions. Buy 1440x900 LED.

1440 x 900. The other options are just there to make you spend money on something you regret so you spend more money on a new screen later on.

My vote goes to the 1440x900 LED screen as well. Much much better than my inspiron 1420's non LED 1440x900 screen whose colors seemed washed out. 1280x800 is too low even on a 14" screen, i would definitely not get it on a 15.4" screen.

My vote goes to 1680x1050. Nothing beats screen estate especially for business use. I just love that I can have a browser and a chat window open next to each other. Movies look good, and games do well at this res. the 8600GT is a pretty decent card. Only if you have bad eyes, I would not recommend this resolution.

Considering I could play Crysis with medium settings and DX10 (even better performance with DX9) I would not equate the 8600 to the 'low' side. It is a solid mid-range card for a notebook. :)

    Thanks everyone for your input!

It looks like it will be the 1400x900 LED screen for me. I hope that watching dvd movies will be ok on this screen size.
