A buddy of mine is psyched about getting this very rig, and is absolutely convinced that he will be able to play anything since it is XPS=(gaming line). I had a hard time explaining to him that it is not a "gaming" laptop so I was thinking of creating this poll just to show him what use other pple are having it for and have a reality check as well.
Thanks...

The XPS lineup isn't necessarily a Gaming Line. However, the XPS is considered the High End line.
It's a general train of thought whereby the XPS is Gaming Based, however it's merely because High End computers are usually taken to be used for Gaming purposes.
The Geforce Go 8400m GS is a fairly decent GPU, considering it is placed in an Ultraportable system. And the performance is pretty good, it beats the 7400 easily and could possibly match up to the 7600 ( once proper drivers can come in ). Heat issues are always a factor with Ultraportables so I'd say the Geforce Go 8400m GS is quite adequate for general gaming needs. Not extraordinary, but adequate.
In my case, I purchased it because it's lightweight, fairly powerful performance, and style.
Other than that, you could easily save $900 by purchasing the Inspiron ( Mid Range Line ) and it'll have better performance than the XPS m1330. -
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
I voted general computing, but also because it's pretty.. Gaming is far from possible on this machine. For that matter, gaming is far from possible on any sub 14" nb. But yes, so far, it's got the best graphics card for it's size. So if thats a consideration, then your friend's right.

Wheres the choice for "watching pr0n"
-
Anyway....I didn't order a M1330 but....for the three people that voted Gaming, are you crazy? If you plan to game pretty well for a few months, that's fine. Good luck with that if you plan to game for a long time on this laptop. -
But my comp is so fast.. im gonna be able to game and watch pr0n at the same time
now that takes alot of alt + tab skills -
-
how about getting 1330 to test its rigidity? you know, the hammer test?
-
I also have my 360 -
I believe the main purpose for buying this system should be taken great consideration of portability and style.
That's pretty much the premium one would pay for this system.
If the buyer doesn't plan on considering those 2 points, then there isn't any point in purchasing this system. Gaming and performance could easily be bought at a much cheaper price.
Else, I doubt someone would be that crazy.
-
Should be fine for most games at mid-resolutions, I personally wouldn't want a 13 incher for gaming...
I was swayed by the looks ...

I had to vote for the "I got it because it is pretty...".
But seriously, the M1330 appeals to me because it isn't a beast to carry around and can still run most games decently as well as having great features such as HDMI output, slot-loading DVD, LED screen, and the thing looks pretty.
Plus, there's the coolness factor of having a near ultra-portable in a world of 15"-17" laptops. -
I need a new one for uni..but so got it for it being pretty and it's a lot of laptop in a tiny package
-
I got it because I always carry my laptop around with me, so light weight is a must. beside the general applications,
I will be using it for software development running visual studio, flash, sql server, oracle etc. Then on the side I intend to do some light gaming running the upcoming starcraft 2, some light fps on medium to low settings etc.
It should even be able to run crysis at medium setting at playable frame rates. -
a 13 inch for gaming?
unless you have an external monitor your going to hook it up when you game...if its sitting on your desk all day to game, its a waste of money. "gaming laptops" are 20lbs and never move from your desk unless your moving
-
i gamed on the m1210 for the whole day i had it..quite enjoyed it apart from the sound quality lol
-
I feel that since it carries the XPS name, it should have the best gpu that is possible to fit inside. Like the 8400M GT but it doesn't. Just my opinion.
-
I bought one for college and casual games. I had a 15.4" HP that was a pain to lug around so the light and portable really appealed to me. I'm not too into gaming, but I do like to bring my laptop over to friends' places and casually game. Plus, it doesn't look half bad. This was one of the few laptops less than 15.4 that had what I thought was a decent graphics card for what I'll use it for. (I think? Or is it complete crap? I like to play Oblivion, but with an ATI 200m, old laptop bleh
, I could only on lowest setting -> no archer)
With this LED display, do you know if you can see the screen outside on a sunny day? It's really disappointing when it's beautiful outside and you can't do your studying out there. -
Hmm.. good to see 25% of us are shallow like me!!
-
I bought it for its portability. Very sleek and slimline, easy enough to take it into work and do a bit of development and light media.
-
If Dell could fit a better GPU at present in the M1330, I think they would have. The 8400M GT is only being used in 14"+ laptops. -
I voted Gaming. As it will be my Lan party machine, although i bought it for other reasons like its portability, and maybe a little bit of its looks, LED and battery life.
I don't understand why everyone is against m1330 to be used for gaming lol. Many have used their m1210 to game which uses 7400go and i know some ppl even uses integrated GPUs to play WoW. The M1330 has a far better GPU even for its "not final" drivers, i wouldn't expect max graphics or anything, i got a rig fully loaded with a 8800GTX for that kind of thing. As for my laptop, it will have my lan games + photoshop (Uni macs are too slow, in RMIT melbourne) and maya and max.
To me, the m1330 is a very good mobile multimedia rig. And its very balanced in terms of performance - weight - battery life. -
It is true that this is the best available card that can fit in a 13.3" laptop, the 8400M GS. However, being an XPS model and having the 8400M GS, doesn't really justify buying it for gaming and portability. They just don't go hand in hand. Maybe in the future smaller machines with start having more graphical power.

General computing + because it is pretty...
-
I'm not satisfied with the NVidia GPU's at all, I don't blame dell on this one..theres no competition in the GPU market right now so NVidia can release whatever they want...
I consider myself a hardcore gamer..I to use the geforce8400 gpu would definately not satisfy me. -
-
to be honest, I don't know why I purchased the M1330. I think it may be due to my compulsive purchasing habits.
But I'm pretty sure it won't disappoint me. -
it was right laptop at the right time for me really. I had to get a new one before i go back to university..I thought there would be a santa rosa/dx10 upgrade to the m1210 so held out a little while..much to my suprise the m1330 popped up.. and at such a good price i couldn't say no..
And just look at it..perhaps the only decent looking dell ever produced..although i quite liked the m1210 -
-
thats very foolish to buy it thinking it will play anything. I'm only planning on playing CS:S on it but i'm going to put rainbow six las vegas and ghost recon on to see how well it copes.
-
I wanted a combo of general computing and it looks nice/is portable.
So I voted for general computing. -
Who's using it as a paper weight? (coz he/she has too much money?)
-
I got it because of the LED screen. I have always wanted a screen that can give me bright and vivid colors.
Currently I am using an IBM X31 that has a dull and crappy bluish LCD and I am totally sick of it. -
I noticed from the US Owners manual that the viewing angle seems much better for the LED backlit model. Only about 10 deg more horizontal angle but much more vertically.
