I understand that and it still is NOT working! I am trying to figure it out since I spent an hour today with Dell support for them to say that the motherboard does not support this...... What a bunch of crap!

Then tell them how can they not support a feature clearly advertised on the 1640 webpage?

    http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-studio-xps-16?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

    Externally Accessible
    (2) USB 2.0 compliant ports
    (1) USB 2.0 compliant / e-SATA port with PowerShare

Also, make them read the Studio XPS 1640 manual:

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/sxl16/en/sg/sg_en.pdf

    Page 16:

    eSATA/USB combo connector with
    USB PowerShare
    –
    Connects to eSATA compatible storage
devices (such as external hard disk drives
or optical drives) or USB devices (such as
a mouse, keyboard, printer, external drive,
    or MP3 player).
This connector can also be used for
charging USB devices when the computer
    is powered on or off
    .
NOTE: If the Studio XPS is turned off
while the USB device is charging,
unplug the device and plug it in again
    to continue charging.
NOTE: The USB PowerShare will be
automatically shut off when only 10%
    of total battery life remains.

Again I went through all this with Dell support who now says that they will have to investigate this and get back to me. I just want to know from someone who is running and able to charge a device after powerdown how EXACTLY your BIOS is configured.

This is a way too complicated question for the Indian support to answer -- I wouldn't expect much from them on this.

Does anyone actually use this port to charge a device? They are now saying that it will not charge most items and that there is a problem that they will address at some point!

Well, one thing I know. My notebook cooler plugged to the eSATA/USB port still works (powered on) even if my laptop is turned off.

I noticed mine worked fine with A05 bios, after I updated the bios to A06 my cellphone stopped charging with the computer off. I even updated to the new A07 bios but does not fix the USB powershare.

Any updates? I have A08 BIOS (just downloaded and updated today), and my eSATA/USB PowerShare port does not charge my iPhone 3GS when my XPS 16 is turned off.

Oddly, though, the port does charge my (now out of service) Samsung i760 Windows Mobile Phone...so the port must be working. Why would the iPhone not charge? I've tried an original Apple USB cable and a cheapy clone USB and neither charges the iPhone.

The manual does state some devices can charge and some can't. My iPod Touch could not.

It turns out it DOES charge iPhone...it's just that it doesn't switch to the "charging/AC" symbol unless the battery is less than 100%.

My iPod Touch's battery was a lot less than 100% charged when I tried. Perhaps iPhone and iPod Touch are different with regards to charging.

I was about to post a thread about this... And found this one. My BB Storm2 won't charge either.. And it's set in the BIOS to let it charge....

Edit: Just plugged in my older notebook cooler.. That has enough juice to run it. I guess the BB just needs too much power to charge...
