    Yo,

After coping with massive amounts of fan noise and idle temps of 65c/85c for months I came on here looking for advice on how to cool my XPS M1330 down. I think I may have done it a few weeks too late.

I've already had my mobo and GPU replaced while under warranty, but I'm out of warranty now. .

Basically what I did was order the components for the copper mod and get I8Kfan GUI to control my temps until they arrived. I had 18k set to kick the fan in on High whenever the CPU got over 55 and the GPU got over 72. Just then, I left my XPS downloading a torrent while I was doing some work.

When I came back and opened the screen, the resolution had changed to 1024x600 and the freakin fan wasn't going at all. The palmrest was so hot it hurt to touch it and the temps were around 90C for GPU and CPU.

I restarted after cooling everything down with a desk fan and the fan still wouldn't come on - either with I8kFan GUI or just on default settings (I have BIOS version A09 to cut down on what was an incredibly loud fan noise when I upgraded to A15).

After cracking open the back case, the cooling unit is all screwed in and connected. The fan just won't move.

Does anyone know what's gone on? I'm thinking of just stashing this machine in the bookcase and buying a new laptop if this isn't easy or cheap to fix.

    Cheers,

    Jonny

UPDATE: I've checked to see that there's nothing to obstruct the fan, it's spinning freely when I blow in it. I8kFan reckons it's still spinning constantly at 1928RPM but I can see through the grill it's not moving.

Does anybody have any ideas of how I can fix it?

    Cheers

    Jonny

    new fan?

Maybe take the fan out and test it with a battery.

If all else fails, trust in the Gods.

I'd cracked my case open fifty thousand times, checked every connection for the fan, blown it out, cleaned it, everything. As a last resort, my housemate suggested I place it in the temple.

The temple is an architectural model of the Temple of Heaven located in Beijing that we got from a friend who'd finished their degree.

I put the fan and heatsink in there, said a few prayers, re-installed it and it worked. If all else fails, try religion.

Are you saying it works fine now?

Can I put my broken notebook in that Temple?

Yeah, it's working perfectly. I flashed the BIOS to A15 for the time being to make sure the fan is working as fast as possible until I can do the copper mod.

Trust the power of the temple.
