    Hi Guys,

I have an SXPS 1340 running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have tried to connect a Western Digital My Book Home external HD through the esata port but i can't get the computer to recognise it. Has anyone else successfully connected this model HD to the 1340 through esata? To those of you who have successfully connected a different external HD through the esata port what brand and model of external HD are you using?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Called Western Digital and they said that the esata connection on the 1340 is not compatible with the esata connection used on any of their external hard drives (only My Book Home Edition and My Book Studio Edition have an esata connection). I'm sure I've read somwhere on this forum that people have successfully connected a WD HD through the esata port.

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

I have a WD My Book Home 2 TB going through E-Sata on my 1640. It works, but not without it's hiccups. Firstly, the drive is retarded in that after 10 minutes of inactivity, it spins down until you access it again. That's all fine and well, but it takes like 10-12 seconds to fully spin up again, so if I were to say, save a file from a web browser onto my main drive, it will hang for a bit while the external spins up. Also, sometimes the system just blatantly doesnt see it, even though its plugged in and spinning, and to get it to work again I need to disconnect the esata and power cables, replug the power and then the esata.

Thanks for the info mmccrarynj. Aren't there any 1340 users connecting an external HD to their lappies through the esata port?

Im using eSata on my 1340 with a Macally external enclosure and it works just fine. See if you can isolate the problem and see whether it is the drive's fault or the laptop.

Thanks for the response nobb. I have access to 2 sxps 1340's and the drive is not recognised on either of them. Other than the 2 1340's and the WD external HD, i don't have any other devices with esata connections. This obviously makes it very hard to isolate the problem.

WD have given me the option of returning the HD for a refund or exchange and i'm hoping the info i gain from this forum will help me to decide which way to go. Ideally, i would like to exchange for another WD product but i won't do that if no one can confirm that a WD external hard drive is working through their esata connection on their sxps 1340.

It's an all in one enclosure so can't put a jumper in. Thanks for the link but I've already been through that thread and it's not quite what I'm looking for. Hoping someone can actually confirm a WD external working through the esata on the 1340 without any mods? If not, hoping someone can give me a model that does work on the 1340? Cheers

In another forum, we've seen lots of examples of certain eSATA cables not working. Often the drive and PC combination work fine once the cable is replaced.

Oh yeah, try a different cable as well if you can. Especially a shorter one.
