I had just received my xps m1530 two days ago, and of course I don't need to explain how excited I was about it. I started working with it right away, configuring things and starting to set things up. Everything worked great, but after about two hours, the problems started... There are two problems, which are most likely related.
The first problem is that I can't adjust the brightness. When I press the function key and the up and down arrows, the little bar shows up and it moves, but the brightness doesn't change. Then if I wait a minute, and try again, the bar starts from the same value it was on earlier. For example, if the brightness was 50%, I can use the function+arrow keys to move the orange bar left and right, but once the bar goes away and I hit those keys again, it still says the bar is at 50%.
The second problem is that if the screen turns off, either because I restart the laptop, or because of power save mode, when I move the mouse or hit any key, the screen doesn't turn back on. The only way to turn it back on is by unplugging the power cord. It works in reverse too. If the power cord is unplugged, the only way to turn the screen back on is by plugging the power back in. My bf says that he can see the screen turn back on when you move the mouse or key, but it is so dim I can't even see it. But apparently it does turn on, but is almost completely dark.
I called Dell's costumer service and was on the phone for an hour and 15 minutes. He concluded that the screen is defective, and they are sending in someone to replace it. I started getting a little upset. I mean, I just spent a lot on this laptop, and it's already defected, and now someone is going to pry it open and probably leave a bunch of dents and scratches on it. So I asked if it's at least going to be a new screen, since this is a brand new computer. Well, and he gave me some crap about how they come with refurbished stickers but they are not necessarily refurbished... Well, at this point I was really upset. If it really is the screen that is defected (I am still not convinced that's the problem), then they sent me a defected product, and now they are going to send someone who will probably ding and scratch up the laptop, and probably stick a refurbished screen in there?!![]()
It says on their return policy that they will either give you a new or refurbished product if yours is defected. I can see them doing that if you have your laptop for a year or even a few months and something goes wrong, and then they give you a refurbished product. It's not like it was new. But this is a new product, they should replace it with a new screen..
Anyway... I am still hoping it might be something else, and not the screen. The technician should call on Monday to schedule an appointment, but I hoped maybe someone here can tell me that the problem is actually something else, and that way I won't have to have them replace the screen. This laptop is really awesome, and I really want to keep it, but right now I am starting to consider returning it.![]()
The only thing I can think that would have done this is messing with the power save mode. I know for a fact the brightness adjustment stopped working after I edited the power saving option. But the technical support guy I talked with on the phone pretty much checked everything he could that had to do with power save mode and couldn't find anything. He also said that because the problem with the screen not turning on also happens when I just turn my laptop on, it probably doesn't have anything to do with the OS itself.
Please let me know if this has happened to you, or if you know a way to fix it.. Thanks a lot.

After reading around, I am not sure it was such a good deal... -
if you're not happy with someone pulling your laptop apart send it back and re-order your within your rights to do this as you have only had it for 2 days.
to make your mouse wake the computer (if its an external usb mouse) you need to eneable USB wake support in the BIOS, its under power management > USB wake support, set it to enabled. otherwise press the power key, i have to do this on mine also.
with regards the Fn key it could be that you need to re-install the quickset driver or something.
hope this helps and that i haven't got hold of the wrong of the stick with regards to the problems you're having.
p.s im in the UK but if i paid what you've paid and got that spec i wouldn't be too upset. -
Hey thanks a lot for replying. Maybe I will return it and reorder it. I was not using an external mouse.
