I just pulled the trigger and finally replaced my old Latitude D600 i had for 6yrs. I purchased a Studio XPS 1340 from Dell Outlet. I think it was a great deal. I was debating between that and an M1330. Here is what i got,
Studio XPS 13 (1340) Laptop: Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (3MB cache/2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB)
256MB nVidia GeForce NB9M-GE (does this mean i got the 9500m?)
13.3 inch HD WXGA Edge-to-Edge Slim Laptop screen W/LED with 1.3 Megapixel Camera
4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz (2 DIMMs)
320 GB Free Fall Sensor Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
Base price was $789.00 scratch and dent
with warranty+complete care 2 yrs $318
Was this a good buy?
I swear people watching the dell outlet are like hawks, i guess you should know what you want and add to your cart ASAP before it disappears. I think i got lucky.

Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
Very good deal. And yes GE 256mb is refering to the 9500m GE Congrats On your purchase you will be very happy
-
Yeah, i've been watching the outlet all day for a good deal on a 1640 and as soon as they show up they're gone. I've learned to add to cart and then look at the specs. Enjoy your purchase!
-

I did the same exact thing except I went for certified refurb... the sound of scratch and dent scares me.
-
we will see how the scratch and dent looks. Hopefully not too major. Reason why i got the complete care warranty. Hopefully another deal comes up again cert and refurb within the next couple of days if i need to exchange.
-
You may be the first to be receiving the 1340 from the Outlet!

Too good to pass on that...and it shipped last night so hopefully here end of the week...pics will be coming -
Got mine from the outlet today. Ordered last Friday so pretty fast. System is running good but my backlit keyboard is not working. Dell is sending out a tech to replace it. Everything else seems great. got a great deal. System seemed brand new.
-
Those 1340 and 1640 deals are hard to come by on the outlet. When I got mine (XPS 16 though, not 13) last night i snatched it up as fast as I could.
-
Your not kidding...I just recommended the studio xps 13 at BB for my parents and happened to check the outlet and they had 9 in. I grabbed one and didn't even checks specs till it was in my cart.
-
I got to see a XPS 13 for the first time at BB. Not very impressed with the overall look and design, just my opinion. I also noticed it had a fair degree of flex on the palm rest and some on the keyboard. The good news is the other Dell laptops had even more flex.

I am about to buy one but I was wondering if there are any Outlet coupons? All I can find is for latitudes.
This is the one I have in my cart right now!
$809.00
Vista Home Premium
4GB RAM
320GB 7200RPM drive
256MB 9500M Graphics
LED Screen
Bluetooth
Certified Refurbished
Looks like a really nice deal $860 after taxes!
Just wondering if I can get it any cheaper? I read that if you ask to return it to the outlet they usually give you a discount to keep it. Did anyone do that? -
What processor does it have?
-
It's not so bad on the XPS 13, so don't worry. -
It is the best price I have found for this so far. -
I mean that's a pretty darn hard press though right? I only have my 1720 to go by but I really have to press down hard on that badboy to get the keyboard to flex even the tiniest amount. Unless I typed with my elbows, I wouldn't be worried about it flexing. -
-
Fair enough...I checked out HPs but their touchpads really bothered me.
Guess it's all relative. -
Dell doesn't like returns. They sometimes will offer you some $$ to keep them. I have seen as much as $100.
Cin -
If it doesn't work out for you..you can always return and exchange for a replacement....
Be happy your getting what you want!
Cin -
Thanks Cin...I'm one of those dingbats who gets all worried about "should I have gone with this" or "I read negative review on that" or "so and so thinks I paid too much" or whatever. Can't help it!
-
Haha how much do you think I can keep my one in the cart? I have firefox set to auto refresh every 2 minutes! I really want a coupon! The only reason I am getting this now is because my M1330 makes a ridiculously annoying whining noise otherwise I would be waiting for the core i5 laptops. I wonder how much value this will lose by the end of the year?
-
WOW I guess not forever. It was just removed from my cart but luckily I was quick enough to put it back in. I will go ahead and order it now.
-
haha, best not to tempt fate. I could've waited around and hoped to find a cheaper equivalent but I figured it was a good deal for what I was getting...there's such a thing as wanting too much lol
-
No worries..it's ordered, once you receive it..you will feel *so much better*
And, Grat's that order...Still, be sure to sign up for those Outlet coupon codes!
Cin -
when the hell r u guys checking the outlet i want a 1640 but never see any in the outlet
-
Tell you what moose, it's extremely difficult to get a 1640 through the outlet. Literally, to get mine, I sat on there for about an hour and hit the "filter results" button over and over about once every three to five minutes or so.
People use programs, or there's really just THAT many people looking for one (probably a combination of both) so that as soon as they pop up, they're gone. You'll see like ten to fifteen pop up all at once, and then they're gone within like 30 seconds.
Your best bet is to either have it presorted by price or by processor...and when you see all those pop up, check the boxes next to as many of them that suit your potential needs as you can, and add them to your cart. Then sort through them one by one to find the specific setup you'd like...especially since if you're really after the RGB LED screen,it won't show up in the initial search...you have to look in the details for it.
That's how I got my 1640 personally, but it took a few diligent hours at the computer (watching TV in the background too though) to get ahold of one that I found acceptable and within my budget. -
Yeah, the 1640's go as quick as they come in, I was watching it for 2 days, refreshing when I could at work. I would add it to my cart before even looking at the specs, and especially seeing I wanted the RGB screen it was tougher, most with it were really expensive. I lucked out last night and got a 2.66 GHz, 500 GB HD, 4 GB RAM, 5300 wireless, BT, BD-ROM, 1920x1080 screen for $1249. I was hoping to keep it around $1k, and couldn't done w/out the BD-ROM, but it had everything else i wanted and was a great deal so I bit on it. Goodluck, I've seen base models in the $700's and some as high as $2000 show up, with every price in between.
-
Before you pull the trigger yourself though I'll mention that you need to be careful...some of them are 2.23ghz core2duos which is readily apparent, but I have been seeing some 5400rpm HD's as well which might be a little easier to look over. Make triple sure it has all the things that you want before you submit the order...you can't cancel the outlet purchases so you'll have to wait to get it and then return it.
-
Hey just wanted to RE: keyboard flex...the XPS 16 certainly has quite a bit more than my 1720 does. I also prefer the tapered keys to the flat keys...but I'm sure I can get over it. Backlit is FTW....it will make stuff so much easier on me in so many situations.
I think the flex isn't too bad though, definitely something I can live with. Especially when I did a side-to-side comparison of the size of the 1720 and the 16.
The heat is essentially the same...palm wrest gets a little warmer on the 16 but the underside isn't much different. Maybe even a touch cooler...definitely heats up faster though, but doesn't get quite as blazing hot.
I'm going to take pictures of the 1720 versus the 16 so you guys can see the comparison...it's amazing how much smaller it is given the viewable space on the screen is so extremely close. -
Cin. -
Yeah...I know that nobody really cares about the 1720 anymore but I think it's just neat to see how far laptops have really come in a short time, and how fast technology changes. Amazing to me that my 16 smokes my 1720 in all things, and yet is smaller and sleeker.
-
hooray for me! i got similar bestbuys config with the rbgled from dell for $1200.00 brand new, the agent has to wait for final approval since its such a price change but i should find out later today,
i had to agure for about 20mins to get it -
So what are your final specs going to be, and how did you go about negotiating the deal? I'd love more details on your good luck!
-
while dell 1720 with 8600m gt may last 3 years w/o a major repair, 1640 is highly likely to break down in 9 months if average usage is 6 hours+ per day.
if you are a heavy gamer, 1640's motherboard is alomost guaranteed to get fried within 6 months. -
If I'm doing heavy gaming, it will be on my desktop. And where are you getting your stats on breakdown times on the 1640? How many people do you know that have had one for 9 months, considering it's been available for like less than six (I'm ballparking here) and why do you consider the average user to be 6+ hours a day?
I mean no disrespect, but I'd really like to see some more solid numbers or proof next to all the 16 bashing stats you're handing out. -
im on my 1340 at least 9hrs a day, the real test will be in aug when ill be on it at least 15hrs a day for nursing school and normal usage
-
Like you, this is my opinion...so, grain of salt handed out. -
-
So I received the laptop on Saturday, this is a scratch and dent from the outlet. I inspect the laptop and didnt see a single scratch and dent on it. I am really happy with this purchase. I really dont like the fact this thing is a finger print magnet. You have to wipe it down after each use. Quick question, how can you tell the difference between LED and CCFL screen. My specs says LED, but how can you tell. Here are some pics,
-
of course it is led, look at that picture on your desktop. fabulous!
led screen is 300 nit minimum/800:1 contrast ratio minimum.
congratulations, scratch and dent units are usually the best ones quality wise in dell outlets.
btw, can you help me out? i wanna buy a xps 16 too, im just not quite sure
about the sound system on it.
sound quality of my studio 17 is at least equal to apple iphone/ipod when plug in a pair of apple earbuds.
i hope speakers on studio 16 can be at least as good as studio 17's. -
-
Why the hell are they called scratch and dents if I don't see any scratches or dents.
-
Pulled the trigger, ordered Studio XPS 1340 from Dell Outlet
