I asked the seller for the description of the product, he gave me this. I bolded what I think confirms that it does in fact carry the 8600m 256mb nVidia card:

Ask to make sure and make sure they have a return policy. for you all you know it may be a 8400GS. Delve deeper.

There is a return policy, that is, as long as I have them install it and not myself. Do you have an XPS m1530? If you do, could you do me a favor and log onto Dell's Support Section with your Service Tag #, and post a copy of your setup (just like the one I posted)? If you have a 128mb card, then it needs to say something like (vice versa with a 256mb card):

"1 XR148 ASSEMBLY, BASE (ASSEMBLY OR GROUP), DISCRETE, 128M, M1530"

I just want to cross-check and make sure this particular line does refer to the video card.

Yes I have an M1530, no I do not have it on me to look it up.

However, I can tell you this. XR148 refers to the part number that is the bottom part of the casing of the M1530. It has nothing to do with the motherboard or video card.

I see. Well if anyone is reading this, can you post your XPS setups like I did in the first post using your Service Tag #?? I want to see if this line refers to the 8600m

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out! It does have the 256mb card, because I did a search on my own setup to check. I know I have the 128mb card, and my setup says this:

Did you read my last post?

That means that line has nothing to do with the GFX card, or the motherboard itself. All that part is that you bolded is the bottom casing of the notebook. Heres a picture of it:

The part that indicates you have a 8600GT should have:
    UW390

Since your list doesn't have any parts that have UW390, either its a 8400GS, or the place where your buying decided not to list it... wouldnt trust that company.

No... the gfx card is not in that line. Read my earlier post:

Assembly base means what it is. An assembly base. Just the bottom casing where they start building the laptop such as the motherboard, etc, but the motherboard and gfx are different part numbers.

So then what exactly do the "Discrete 256m" and "Discrete 128m" mean? Surely it can't mean anything other than "256 MB Discrete Video Memory"

Yeah, most likely thats what it is, but you may want to check it just to make sure. I just looked up my service tag on my invoice and looked up the part. It actually has the UW390 8600GT as a separate part number instead of part of the assembly base.

I think the place where your buying from just decided to indicate the gfx card within the assembly base.

128 most likely refers to 8400GS
256 most likely refers to 8600GT

I'd still call them just to double check.

Yes there is a 256MB 8400GS, but Dell doesnt have it as a config option, unless they did so for that particular retailer, which is unlikely.

Here is a System Configuration of an m1530 I did a check on with someone else's Service Tag number I found randomly through Google. They said they had an 8600m, so I assumed it would have the "DISCRETE 256M" part, and it did:

    .......1 XR856 BRACKET..., SUPPORT..., METAL..., 15.4, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., R, M1530
1 XR857 ASSEMBLY..., CABLE..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., M1530
    1 HX425 KIT..., SOFTWARE..., OVERPACK..., VHP32, A01, DIGITAL VIDEO DISK DRIVE..., ENGLAND/ENGLISH...
4 2864D SCREW..., M3X3, K SCREW HEAD..., MICROSOFT..., BLACK OXIDE...
1 D501F ASSEMBLY..., BASE (ASSEMBLY OR GROUP)..., DISCRETE..., 256M, M1530
    1 RM067 HARD DRIVE..., 160GB, S2, 5.4, 9.5, WD-ML160
    1 F084D KIT..., SOFTWARE..., ROXIO..., 10-0, DE........

However, notice how the assembly base # is different from mine and the one I am buying. This one is "D501F"

I don't think you can get an 8400m with 256MB on an XPS M1530. What I'm saying is that I don't think it's an option.

Like I said in my previous post.. the 8400M GS is only available in 128, so Im pretty sure that is the 8600GT video card that your thinking brerben. Though like I said, I'd still call to make sure.

I checked and that system will come with the 8600GT, the other tag that you checked has a different base number because it's for Penryn Core while the other computer has a Merom one. So both systems have a 8600GT

So which is better, Penryn or Merom?
