Hi there! After going back and forth since the XPS 15z came out I've decided on the XPS 15.

I'm also looking at the Dell Ultrasharp U2410 Monitor as I do a lot of graphic/photo work. I asked a Dell salesperson the following questions, but I am not satisfied with the answers I received after he changed his mind several times.

The Dell XPS 15 has the following:
    Mini DisplayPort (1),
    HDMI 1.4

    Whilst the montior has:
    Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Digital Visual Interface - Digital (DVI-D) with HDCP
    DisplayPort(DP)
    High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)

    and comes with:
    DVI cable
    DisplayPort(DP) Cable
VGA Cable (attached to the monitor)

How (with what cables/connectors) would I hook up the laptop to this monitor? Do I need a HDMI cable and a mini-display port to HDMI adapter?

The salesperson said I would only need what came with the monitor to connect it to the laptop but there is no HDMI cable included as far as I can see.

Thank you all very much for your help, I've enjoyed reading the forum to date.

    :D

Get a mini DisplayPort -> full-sized DisplayPort adapter ($5ish from China on eBay, a lot more elsewhere). Use the bundled DisplayPort cable, and plug the laptop into the monitor that way.

Forget HDMI, this isn't consumer electronics :)

Thank you VivienM for your quick response! I really appreciate your help - now I can go purchase the laptop and hopefully it will ship fairly quickly as my Dell XPS400 is about to expire... :)

I don't know about blu-ray and HDCP and whatnot... (and I can't test - while I do have a L502x and a U2410, they're not plugged into each other and I don't have the DP adapter)

Keep in mind, though, DisplayPort monitors are EXTREMELY rare. The U2410 happens to be one of them. The person in the forum thread you are pointing to was dealing with a situation where you were plugged into a TV with an HDMI input.

Thanks again VivienM. I've decided in the last couple of hours that I am going to go with the 23" Ultrasharp U2311H Monitor rather than the 24". This monitor does not come with a bundled DisplayPort cable from what I can see from the tech specs:

    What's in the Box:
    DVI Cable
VGA Cable (attached to the monitor)

    Connectivity:
1 Digital Visual Interface connectors (DVI-D) with HDCP
    DisplayPort (DP)
    Video Graphics Array (VGA)

So now, to work out how to connect this monitor to the Mini DisplayPort. I'm wondering if this adapter would work: VISIONTEK Active Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Adapter : Desktop Accessories | Dell or would I still need the mini DisplayPort -> full-sized DisplayPort adapter?

This is really giving me a headache...

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks! :)

That's a very very very expensive and unnecessary way of going about it (since you already have an HDMI out, and HDMI and DVI are easy to convert between).

Two options, given this monitor has no HDMI in but does have DisplayPort in:
    1) Get a HDMI to DVI cable. (Much cheaper)
    2) Get a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable (the same as the one bundled with the U2410), and the mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter.

Whether there's any reason to favour one or the other, I don't know. I'd go with (2) myself, but that's just me being irrational...

As you can probably tell I am *not* a technical person!

Thank you (again) and I will take your advice.

With much gratitude, thank you VivienM.

DP does support HDCP, so you should be able to play blu-ray content on the monitor regardless of how you connect it. Going mDP to DP would probably be your best bet, as DP is designed for computer monitors where HDMI is for TVs/home theater, though HDMI to DVI will work as well.

Does option 1 work for any bodby? I tried an HDMI cable plus an HDMI(female)-DVI(male) adapter to connect the XPS 15 and U2410 LCD, but HDCP and Blu-Ray playback does NOT work.

Everything works okay in my setup, except blu-ray playback which requires HDCP.

When you go to the NVIDIA Control Panel, what does the Display->View HDCP Status says? Mine says "Your display does not support HDCP"; this is true no matter I am using HDMI directly or using the HDMI-DVI adapter.
