    Question about 8GB RAM on XPS 15 ?

    Hi All,

    I understand XPS 15 can be installed with RAM up to 8GB however is it the max limit on XPS 15? If there is a single piece 8GB would it be possible to max it out up to 16GB?

    Please geek help me on this as there is a great deal on my local store here :)

    Theoretically all Sandy Bridge laptops accept 8 GB sticks, the problem is they are crazy expensive (Alienware has them for about 400 a pop, while Precision charges 2000 a stick). I do not recommend buying from those 3rd party sites that claim to have them for 200-400 a stick. Should only be Samsung who has them in that size.

    Also it should be noted that 2630qm supports only up to 8GB, whereas 2720qm supports up to 16GB of ram according to Intel's website.

    Well I'm not planning to upgrade it straight forward but when 8G stick is more common


    Mmmmm so it's a dead end 8GB only?


    So do you think it should be able to boosted up to 16GB?

    2630QM supports 16GB.... (my friend is using 16g in xps 17 with 2630QM)
    so all i can say ... u needn't worry about being processor limited at least...

    Good to hear, Intel's site claims that 2630 and 2620 only support 8GB. I guess that is a lie.

    Not a lie but 8 GB sticks were only barely being introduced when the M6500/8740W/W701 were still on the market. They also probably did not officially test XX processor with 8/16GB RAM. Just like certain Santa Rosa chipset + BIOS support 8 GB DDR2.

    So can I sum up that the XPS 15 with i7 2630qm can go up to 16GB although the dell website can only customise up to 8GB ?

    Yes thats correct, you can only customise it to 8 because it only has 2 sodimm slots and dell dont use 8gb sticks. And i can confirm my 17 with a 2630 max ram is 16gb.

    Dell doesn't offer it on XPS, but they do offer it on Alienware and Precision laptops. Not too many people are keen to spend 2800 dollars on RAM which is almost double the cost of an XPS laptop.

    Exactly, more than 8gb is pretty pointless for the average user anyway. I was aware they offer 8gb sticks in alienware.
