    Hey,

    I was just wondering:

    A) Do you have to buy warranty / Acc. damage protection at the time of getting the laptop or can you buy them at any point within the first year like you can with Apple Care?

    B) Is it possible to go to a 3rd party company to get accidental damage cover at a cheaper cost than what Dell charge?

Although I am in the US, big international companies tend to share best practices globally. I bought an M1530 with 1yr warranty but then called up Dell to increase to3yr-they transferred me to the warranty dept. They gave me a quote (same price if you bought on line) but when I said I would have to think about it and call them back - the pricing started to drop dramatically - I think they are trained not to let you go. I ended up with a 3year for 25% less than on the Dell website and I got 3 yrs Accidental for about 40GBP. Good luck and I hope this strategy will work for you in the UK.

Cheers, it's just because I don't really want to drop all that money on the laptop at once when I have a full year warranty anyway. Accidental damage i'm not too worried about as i'm careful with it and my Acer has gone 2 years without any damage to it and they are made out of quite rubbish materials compared to the XPS, but its served me well lol.

The total cost for 3 years warranty and 3 years accidental damage comes to just under £300. Hardly seems like a fair price when the laptop is costing under £700.

I've seen 3rd party companies that will cover a laptop against theft and accidental damage (including water damage) worldwide for £5 per month. I know it works out about the same as the Dell charge for this (£69 per year accidental damage) but i'm not sure if Dell cover it for worldwide travel or if it covers water damage?
