Ok, so I'M looking to get a Studio XPS 16" laptop with an i7 processor. Currently on the http://www.dell.com/signatureevent website, there is a dell xps that starts at $1199 (original price $1604) , and has the option of the i7-620M processor which I want, but on this day deal ad I got in the mail it shows the same laptop which starts monday, but $1399 (starting at $1873) with an "i7". However this ad does not state if it's the i7-620M or one of the quad cores I do not want.
The problem is, the current deal ends at the same time the new one starts onMonday.

    Current Deal: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=DYDNFN2&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19

    Mondays Deal:

    The e-value code is: 6M378-DYPDFN2

What I'M wanting for upgrades are as followed:

    i7-620M (dual @ 2.66 (turbo to 3.33))
    6GB memory
    16" RGBLED LCD screen
    256GB SSD
    9 Cell Battery

I just don't know if I should go with the deal that is good right now that has the dual core i7 I want, or wait for the other one as i don't know if it's the quad or dual?

I'd worry more about the overheating problem than the cpu which is offered in this advertisement. Due to bad construction the vent opening gets blocked when you open your screen. Just thought you should know this, I almost bought the studio xps 16 aswell.

And people said the same about my SXPS 13 which has yet to overheat.

For what it's worth, I've been very impressed with the cooling on my 1645. There are issues with the 1645's, as this forum testifies to, but I don't think cooling is one of them.

What are you talking about? Take your speculations on the i7 elsewhere. There is plenty of documentation on temps with the i7 XPS 16 notebook not having ANY problems with heating even when overclocking. There is sufficient space between the screen to allow the air to still flow out, its not like its sealing it off.

What it DOES have a severe problem with is performance throttling, and THAT problem is why i sent mine back. It never once had a issue with heating.

I did not speculate about the heating issues, those are reffered to in quite a few discussions I read, which is why I didn't buy one.
So the heating issues are fixed with the core i7 models then? That is sure a pleasent surprise, I expected it to be worse with such powerfull cpu's.

The CPUs seem to manage their temps a lot better. Sorry for biting your head off a bit, I re-read your post and see now that you were referring to the 1640 which definitely had heat issues.

Too many people on these notebook forums just spout out nonsense so I jumped to that conclusion.

Still wouldn't recommend the 1645 i7 though because of the throttle issues even to some one with minimal needs, as you can save a lot of money and get better stock non-modified performance. Throttlestop and the 130watt power AC adapter do make this a screamin notebook though. I'll definatly miss it.

The dell studio xps16 would not give me the performance I want anyway, the ati hd4670 is too old for me; I can get an asus g73jh for the exactly same budget. They charge like 280-340€ (depending on the model you chose)more for that 16 inch led screen in the sxps16.

As for the throtling issues, aren't core i7's made for throtling? Personnaly I feel that those 1.6 core i7's seem way too low clocked (eventhough it has more power with less ghz witouth even hyper threading compared to a c2duo), I would rather have a stable cpu like those quad core 2 xtreme processors which alienware offers. Or a higher clocked core i7,although I would have to wait a few more eyars to get what i really want, at an affordable price :p
