I purchased a very low quality and cheap MDG laptop 3-4 years ago. My friend's laptop is even older than that, and both had a 1280x800 resolution or something like that. But when I shop for mainstream laptops (ie, places like Best Buy) today I realize the resolution is often lower now with the same size screens. Does anyone know the reason behind this? Is 1360x760 (can't remember exact number) the standard now? =/

1366x768 became standard when laptops moved to the 16:9 aspect ratio. It's a disgrace to any laptop larger than 14", but laptop manufacturers see cheap lcd panels as a great way to cut costs in laptops (Dell is the only manufacturer I know of that has consistently good displays). Until more people start to complain about it, expect it to get even worse.

yea, after the 16:9 ratio became populra, this 1366x768 resolution popped up.
When I got my laptop, I didn't think it'd be a big deal, but now I know first hand the limitations of 768 resolution lolx =/
"disgrace" to laptops >14" is right. At least 900px please!!!
and ... HP laptops need to catch up with this higher res >15" laptop. -
Doesn't Dell have 1280x800? That is roughly the same as 1366x768 isn't it?
-
1280x800 was the standard with 16:10 laptops, which no longer exist. 1366x768 is the 16:9 replacement for 1280x800.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
For the record there are actually more pixels on a 1366 x 768 screen than on a 1280 x 800 screen. It's not a lot, the difference is about 20000, but it's enough such that you can't really say that 1366 x 768 is a "lower" resolution than 1280 x 800.
I'm not saying that 16:9 is the way to go (it isn't), but you do get a couple thousand more pixels. -
